Overwatch Rank Reset and Placement Matches (2026): How They Work

When Overwatch resets Competitive ranks, how the ten placement matches per role work, every reset since 2024, what the August 2026 Emerald redistribution did, and when the next reset is likely.

Updated 2026-11-02 · 9 min read · by the BoostPirate crew
  • 10 placements per role
  • Resets about every 3 seasons
  • Last full reset: 10 Feb 2026
  • Emerald redistribution: 11 Aug 2026

Overwatch doesn't reset your rank every season. Months pass between resets, which makes each one easy to forget until your rank suddenly reads Unranked. This guide covers the rules as they stand on 2 November 2026: when you play placement matches and how many, every reset Blizzard has run since 2024, what the August 2026 Emerald update did (and didn't do) to your rank, what carries over, where you're likely to land, and when the next reset is likely to come.

Short answer: Overwatch gives you a rank after 10 placement matches per role. You play them on a new role or account, and again when Blizzard resets Competitive ranks, which has happened every three seasons since 2024. The last full reset was on 10 February 2026, when every Role Queue and Open Queue rank went back to Unranked. On 11 August 2026 the new Emerald tier redistributed ranks without a reset to Unranked. Blizzard hasn't announced the next reset yet.
Key takeaways
  • Ten placement matches per role. Tank, Damage, Support and Open Queue each place on their own.
  • Full resets came in February and August 2024, February and August 2025, and February 2026: one every three seasons.
  • Emerald's arrival (11 August 2026) was a redistribution, not a reset to Unranked; Blizzard's notes mention no placements.
  • Your hidden MMR carries over and drives where you place; there's no rank decay between resets.
  • Stadium has no placements. Each new season starts you 5 to 15 divisions lower, depending on your league.

How many placement matches Overwatch asks for

Since Season 9 (February 2024) the rule has been the same, and Blizzard restates it at every reset: "You must complete 10 matches in a role to receive your Skill Rank for that role." When placements come up depends on why:

SituationPlacement matchesWhat to expect

StadiumnoneYou start at the bottom of Rookie; later seasons drop you a set number of divisions.

Each queue counts on its own, so a player who places Tank, Damage, Support and Open Queue after a reset plays 40 placement games in all. Most players only place the roles they actually queue for. A role you leave alone simply stays Unranked.

Every rank reset since 2024

Blizzard has run five full resets since February 2024, then one redistribution. These are the dates from its patch notes:

DateSeasonWhat happened
13 Feb 2024Season 9Every Role Queue and Open Queue rank reset to Unranked; hidden MMR decayed, more at higher ranks; Champion added; ten placements per role. Notes
20 Aug 2024Season 12Every rank reset; ten placements per role; your Predicted Rank now decides whether a group is narrow or wide while you place. Notes
18 Feb 2025Season 15Reset to Unranked with the arrival of Perks, “designed to put players on an even playing field”. Notes
26 Aug 2025Season 18Reset to Unranked; season rewards switched to your highest rank of the season. Notes
10 Feb 2026Reign of Talon Season 1Full reset to Unranked in Role Queue and Open Queue; ten placements per role. The last full reset so far. Notes
11 Aug 2026Reign of Talon Season 4Emerald added and ranks redistributed — Blizzard's notes call it a Rank Redistribution and mention no placements. Notes

The rhythm comes from the calendar. Overwatch runs six seasons a year, each about eight to nine weeks long (Blizzard calls nine weeks "typical"), and the full resets landed on the first and fourth season of every year: February and August. Blizzard said as much in August 2024: "Our plan is to reset ranks every 6 months alongside larger updates that shake up the metagame." It repeated the cycle in February 2026, when it described the new Top 500 icons as coming "at each Rank Reset, meaning that a new icon becomes available to earn every 3 seasons". The 2026 seasons began on 10 February, 14 April, 16 June, 11 August and 6 October.

Overwatch rank resets from 2024 to 2027 as a grid of six seasons per year: full resets to Unranked in Season 9 (13 February 2024), Season 12 (20 August 2024), Season 15 (18 February 2025), Season 18 (26 August 2025) and Reign of Talon Season 1 (10 February 2026); a Rank Redistribution with Emerald in Season 4 on 11 August 2026; Season 5 from 6 October 2026 marked as now; Season 6 around 8 December 2026 from the in-game timer, unofficial; and the 2027 Season 1 marked as an expected reset that is not announced. The Emerald redistribution of 11 August 2026

Season 4 fell on the usual August reset slot, and many players expected one. Instead Blizzard added Emerald rank iconEmerald between Platinum rank iconPlatinum and Diamond rank iconDiamond and ran what its notes call a Rank Redistribution. In Blizzard's words it "primarily focuses on moving players that were Platinum and Diamond into Emerald", and "the highest Divisions of Champion will now also be more exclusive".

The difference matters. A reset sends everyone to Unranked and asks for ten placement games per role. The redistribution moved existing ranks to fit the longer, 45-division ladder; the notes mention neither Unranked nor placements. If your Diamond became Emerald in August, the redistribution did that, not a bad run of games. Our ranks guide shows the new ladder.

What a reset keeps and what it clears

Kept

Your heroes, skins and career history. Your Competitive Points: CP turn into Legacy CP only when a competitive year ends, which the February 2025 and February 2026 resets happened to coincide with. Your hidden MMR: Blizzard says rank and MMR "have been linked" since Season 9, and placements read it.

Cleared

Your visible rank in every Role Queue role and in Open Queue, which shows Unranked until you finish ten placements in it. At the Season 9 reset Blizzard also decayed hidden MMR, "the higher the rank, the more"; its notes for later resets don't mention a decay.

Between resets nothing wears away: in February 2026 Blizzard said pseudo-rank decay for high-ranked players "is not an option for us today". So a break of a few weeks doesn't cost you rank; only playing does.

Where you will place

Placement games are ordinary Competitive matches, and the result comes from the same hidden rating that matchmaking already holds for you. That is why players who finished high usually place high again. Three official details shape the result:

  1. You see a Predicted Rank.

Since August 2024 the game shows your Predicted Rank wherever your own rank appears while you place. Only you can see it.

  2. It decides your group type.

Your Predicted Rank, not "Unranked", decides whether a group you join is narrow or wide. Blizzard made the change so unplaced players get much faster queues. See our group rules guide.

  3. No published cap.

Blizzard doesn't publish a highest or lowest possible placement, so ignore anyone who quotes one.

Once placed, the rank moves after every match like any other, so a cautious placement is soon corrected. Blizzard Support can't help if you don't like the result: its own article says "Customer Support is unable to adjust Overwatch 2 rankings."

When is the next rank reset?

Blizzard hasn't announced it. The pattern points to one date, but treat it as an expectation, not a fact:

  • Season 5 is running now. "A Grim Doctrine" started on 6 October 2026. Blizzard hasn't announced its end; Dexerto reports the in-game Battle Pass timer points to 8 December 2026 for Season 6, an unofficial reading.
  • Season 6 closes the year. Blizzard's 2026 plan runs "Season 1 through Season 6, before a new Season 1 launches in 2027", and it promises its 2027 roadmap at a Spotlight in February 2027.
  • Every competitive year since 2024 opened with a reset (February 2024, 2025 and 2026), and three seasons after the August 2026 redistribution is the 2027 Season 1.

So the new Season 1 expected in early 2027 is the likeliest moment, but only Blizzard's patch notes will confirm it. Our season calendar guide and the season calendar track the dates.

Stadium: no placements, a smaller drop

Stadium keeps its own leagues and plays by different rules. There are no placement matches: a new player starts at the bottom of Rookie and climbs by winning. When a new season starts, Stadium doesn't wipe you back to Rookie any more. Since 14 April 2026 it moves you down a set number of divisions from your previous season's final rank:

Last season's leagueYou start the new season inDrop
ContenderNovice5 divisions
EliteContender5 divisions
ProElite5 divisions

A checklist for your ten placement games

  1. Place your strongest role first.

Each role places separately, so start with the one you'd most like to see ranked. A calm first set also tells you how the new season's meta feels before you place the others.

  2. Read the season's patch notes.

Resets have come with big changes, such as Perks in February 2025 and sub-roles in February 2026. Know what changed for your heroes before game one.

  3. Set your Preferred Hero.

Your Roster's number-one hero casts three votes against being banned by your own team. The hero bans guide explains the vote.

  4. Group narrow, or play solo.

A wide group shrinks every rank change. Your Predicted Rank decides which one you are, even while you're unplaced.

  5. Finish all ten, and don't leave.

Leaving Competitive matches brings penalties up to suspensions; see leaver penalties. Two or three games per session, warmed up, beats a tired marathon.

Placements with help

Our Placement Matches service is sold per game, one to ten, in the role you pick, so you order only the games you have left. The price follows the rank you held before the reset; a new role or account is priced at the lowest tier. Ten games for a new role are $24.30 today, and ten for a role that was Diamond before the reset $38.70, from the same engine as checkout. Overwatch orders aren't open yet: get the launch alert on the Overwatch page.

Be clear about the rules: Blizzard's End User License Agreement forbids account boosting for payment, and an account that breaks it can be actioned. Read the Risk Disclosure and is Overwatch boosting safe? first. If you'd rather play every game yourself, coaching before your placements stays inside the rules.

  • Placement games: one to ten games per role, piloted or duo.
  • After you place: Rank Boost from your new rank to any division up to Champion 1.
  • Prepare yourself: 1-on-1 coaching with a Grandmaster+ coach on your own account.
Overwatch boosting opens soon. Get the launch alert on the Overwatch page. The service pages already show live prices for placement games (from $2.70 a game) and a rank boost (from $4.00 a division).

FAQ

Common questions

How many placement matches are there in Overwatch?
Ten per role. Tank, Damage and Support each need ten matches before they show a rank, and Open Queue needs its own ten. You play them on a new role or account and again after every rank reset.
When is the next Overwatch rank reset?
Blizzard hasn't announced it. Resets have come every three seasons since 2024, and every competitive year since then has opened with one, so the new Season 1 expected in early 2027 is the likely moment. Treat that as an expectation, not a date.
Did the Emerald update reset my rank?
Not to Unranked. On 11 August 2026 Blizzard redistributed ranks: it mainly moved former Platinum and Diamond players into the new Emerald tier and made the top Champion divisions more exclusive. Its notes mention no placement matches.
Does my Overwatch rank reset every season?
No. A new season without a rank reset keeps your rank in every role, and it keeps moving after every match. Full resets to Unranked came in February and August 2024, February and August 2025 and February 2026.
