- 9 tiers, 45 divisions
- Emerald since 11 Aug 2026
- Top 500 above Champion
- Unlock: 50 wins
Overwatch's Competitive ladder grew a rung this year. On 11 August 2026 Blizzard added
Emerald between
Platinum and Diamond, so the ladder you climb today is five divisions longer than the one most older guides describe. This guide lays it
out as it stands on 2 November 2026, in Reign of Talon Season 5: every rank in order with Blizzard's own icons, what Emerald
changed, how Champion and the Top 500 Challenger leaderboard sit at the top, why you hold more than one rank, and how the ladder has
moved since 2024. Blizzard dropped the "2" from the name on 10 February 2026, so this is the same game, and the same ladder, that many
players still search for as Overwatch 2.
- Nine tiers × five divisions = 45 divisions. Emerald (11 August 2026) sits between Platinum and Diamond.
- You hold up to four ranks. Tank, Damage and Support each have one in Role Queue, and Open Queue has another. Stadium has separate leagues.
- Rank updates after every match. Modifiers on the results screen explain each gain or loss; there is no rank decay.
- Competitive needs 50 wins to unlock (since 12 May 2026), then 10 placement matches per role.
- Blizzard shows your percentile in game with the Rank Distribution Indicator, but publishes no distribution table.
Every Overwatch rank in order
Overwatch has nine Competitive tiers, each split into five divisions numbered from 5 at the bottom of the tier to 1 at the top. Blizzard's own tables count them that way ("Master 5–1", "Champion 5–1"), so Gold 1 sits directly below Platinum 5 and a climb from Bronze 5 to Champion 1 passes 45 divisions. These are the icons you see in game:
Bronze
5 · 4 · 3 · 2 · 1
Silver
5 · 4 · 3 · 2 · 1
Gold
5 · 4 · 3 · 2 · 1
Platinum

Emerald

Diamond

Master
5 · 4 · 3 · 2 · 1
Grandmaster

Champion

The table adds where each tier sits on the 45-step ladder, how far apart players in that tier can be and still form a narrow group, and the one thing worth knowing about it in 2026.
| Rank | Steps (of 45) | Narrow group within | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–5 | 5 divisions | The start of the ladder: Bronze 5 is step 1. Near the very bottom the Pressure modifier can give more progress per win and take less per loss. | |
| 6–10 | 5 divisions | Your rank moves after every match. The old wait for five wins or fifteen losses ended in Season 9 (February 2024). | |
| 11–15 | 5 divisions | Gold 5 and Platinum 5 can still queue as a narrow group: five divisions apart is the limit from Bronze to Diamond. | |
| 16–20 | 5 divisions | Many former Platinum players moved up into Emerald when the new tier arrived on 11 August 2026. | |
| 21–25 | 5 divisions | New on 11 August 2026 (Season 4: Heroes of Busan), with its own titles and weapon charms. | |
| 26–30 | 5 divisions | Reaching Diamond or above in Role Queue or Open Queue unlocks Doomfist's Crimson Wolf skin in 2026. | |
| 31–35 | 2 divisions | Wins from Master 5 upward earn Challenger Score, the entry ticket to the Top 500 boards. | |
| 36–40 | 2 divisions | Master and Grandmaster narrow groups were cut from three divisions to two on 9 December 2025. | |
| 41–45 | 1 division | Added in Season 9 as "more exclusive than any other rank". Its top divisions became more exclusive again in August 2026. | |
| Top 500 Challenger | above step 45 | n/a | Separate boards per role, Combined, Open Queue and Stadium for each platform and region; you qualify, then the board orders players by Rank. |
Steps count Bronze 5 as step 1 and Champion 1 as step 45; each tier's five divisions run 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Narrow-group limits: Blizzard patch notes of 16 April 2024, 14 May 2024 and 9 December 2025.
Emerald: the newest rank
Emerald arrived with Reign of Talon Season 4: Heroes of Busan on 11 August 2026. Blizzard's patch notes put it simply: "A new Rank has
been added between Platinum and Diamond called Emerald", with its own titles and weapon charms. It took the ladder from 40 divisions to
45, so
Platinum →
Emerald →
Diamond is now the
order in the middle of the ladder.
The new tier came with a Rank Redistribution. In Blizzard's words it "primarily focuses on moving players that were Platinum and Diamond into Emerald", and "the highest Divisions of Champion will now also be more exclusive". It was not a rank reset: the notes mention no placement matches and no return to Unranked, so every player kept a rank and some simply found a different icon next to it. If you finished Season 3 in Platinum or Diamond and started Season 4 in Emerald, that came from the redistribution, not from your results.
What it means in practice:
- A Platinum-to-Diamond climb is longer. Platinum 1 to Diamond 1 is now ten divisions, five of them in Emerald.
- Old rank tables are out of date. Any guide, distribution chart or price list built before 11 August 2026 has no Emerald row.
- Blizzard tracks it as its own tier. The official Hero Stats page lists Emerald as a tier filter for pick, win and ban rates.
Champion and the Top 500 Challenger leaderboard
Champion is the top tier. Blizzard added it above Grandmaster in Season 9 (13 February 2024) and called it
"more exclusive than any other rank in Overwatch"; the August 2026 redistribution made its highest divisions more exclusive still. Champion
1 is the highest division you can hold.
Above it sits the Top 500, which Blizzard rebuilt as the Challenger leaderboard in Season 20 (9 December 2025). It is not a rank you climb into but a board you qualify for, with nine boards per platform and region: Tank, Damage, Support and Combined for the core 5v5 game and for Stadium, plus Open Queue. In 2026 you need:
- The Adept Competitor challenge: 250 lifetime Competitive wins (it was 750 before 10 February 2026).
- Endorsement Level 2, the default starting level for new players.
- Challenger Score: 1,500 on a role board, 2,000 on Combined or Open Queue. Score comes only from wins at Master 5 and above, and Diamond no longer counts.
Since Season 5 (6 October 2026) the board is sorted by Rank, not by score: Challenger Score only decides whether you're on it, and the Heat Bonus is gone. Blizzard notes it's now possible to be number 1 with the lowest score of the 500. The full rules are in our Top 500 Challenger guide.
One rank per role queue, and a separate Stadium ladder
"What rank are you?" has up to four answers in Overwatch. Role Queue (five against five: one Tank, two Damage, two Support) gives you a separate rank in each role, and Open Queue (six against six, any heroes) has a fourth rank of its own. Each places on its own ten matches and moves on its own results, and all four reset together; the last full reset was on 10 February 2026. End-of-season titles carry the role, such as Champion Tank or Open Queue Champion.

So your Support rank can be Diamond while your Tank rank is Gold. That matters if you buy help or duo: a booster or friend plays the queue you choose, and your other ranks don't move. Our Role Queue vs Open Queue guide compares the two.
Stadium, the mode Blizzard launched in April 2025, has a ladder of its own: seven leagues (Rookie, Novice, Contender, Elite, Pro, All-Star and Legend) of five divisions each, a rank per role and no placement matches. It doesn't use the icons above; see our Stadium ranks guide.
How you move between divisions
Since Season 9 your rank updates after every match; the old system waited for five wins or fifteen losses. Each division is a bar of Rank Progress. Win and it fills, lose and it empties; fill it and you move up a division. Underneath the result, skill modifiers show why a match moved you as much as it did. In Blizzard's words they reflect "win or loss streaks, rank instability, and match favorability", plus the Wide and Pressure modifiers added in 2024.
Dropping works differently. When a loss would push you out of your division, Demotion Protection appears on the bar and you keep it; lose the next match as well and you drop to the division below. There is no rank decay: in February 2026 Blizzard said pseudo-rank decay for high-ranked players "is not an option for us today". Every modifier and how to read your own gains are covered in rank progress and MMR explained.
Getting your first rank
Competitive is locked on a new account until you have 50 wins. Blizzard raised the requirement from 20 to 50 on 12 May 2026; from August 2025 it had been 20 wins in Unranked modes. Our unlock guide covers what counts.
After that, each role needs 10 placement matches before it shows a rank: Tank, Damage, Support and Open Queue separately. While you place, the game shows you a Predicted Rank that only you can see, and uses it to decide whether a group you join is narrow or wide. Blizzard publishes no cap on how high you can place. The same ten games come back after every rank reset, about every three seasons: see rank resets and placements.
Where most players sit
Blizzard doesn't publish a rank distribution, so treat any percentage table you find online as a third-party estimate. One that predates 11 August 2026 can't include Emerald at all. Blizzard's answer is in the game: since Season 4 the Competitive Overview carries a Rank Distribution Indicator that "shows how your Rank compares to all other players" in that queue. Open it for each role; it is the only official percentile there is.
For the heroes played at your level, Blizzard's Hero Stats page filters pick, win and ban rates by tier (Emerald included), input, map and region.
How the ladder has changed since 2024
After Champion arrived in February 2024 the tiers stayed the same for two and a half years, until Emerald; the rules around them changed every few months. The changes that shape the ladder you play on today:
| When | Change |
|---|---|
| 13 Feb 2024 · Season 9 | |
| 16 Apr 2024 · Season 10 | Old grouping restrictions removed: every group is narrow or wide. Demotion Protection added. |
| 14 May 2024 | Pressure modifier made visible; Grandmaster allowed narrow groups within three divisions, Champion within one. |
| 20 Aug 2024 · Season 12 | Rank reset; your Predicted Rank decides narrow or wide while you place. |
| 18 Feb 2025 · Season 15 | Perks arrive; rank reset. |
| 22 Apr 2025 · Season 16 | Hero Bans in Competitive; Stadium launches with its own leagues. |
| 24 Jun 2025 · Season 17 | Map Voting before the ban phase. |
| 26 Aug 2025 · Season 18 | Rank reset; season rewards follow your highest rank, not your final one. |
| 9 Dec 2025 · Season 20 | Top 500 becomes the Challenger leaderboard; Master and Grandmaster narrow within two divisions. |
| 10 Feb 2026 · Reign of Talon S1 | Full reset to Unranked; the "2" dropped from the name; sub-roles added. |
| 12 May 2026 | Competitive unlock raised from 20 to 50 wins. |
| 11 Aug 2026 · Season 4 | |
| 6 Oct 2026 · Season 5 | Top 500 Challenger boards sorted by Rank; Challenger Score only qualifies you. |
Blizzard hasn't said what changes next. Season 5's end isn't announced (the in-game Battle Pass timer points to 8 December 2026, an unofficial reading), and Blizzard says a new Season 1 starts in 2027, with its plans due at the February 2027 Spotlight.
Help with the climb
If the rank is the goal and the hours aren't there, our Overwatch services are priced division by division from the same engine as checkout, with Emerald on the ladder.
