CS2 update (22 Oct): Valve expands map scripting — hostage events, Console and GameRules exports, no gameplay changes

Valve's 22 October update is a map-scripting release for Workshop creators: the point_script API gains precache and hostage hooks, new Console and GameRules exports, and radar elements now work in every game mode instead of only Rush. There is no weapon, map, matchmaking or anti-cheat change in the notes, so nothing moves for Premier, Competitive, Wingman or FACEIT play — your rating, Skill Group and Elo progress are untouched.

Published 22 Oct 2026, 22:56 UTCUpdated 1 h agoSource Valve on Steam
  • Shipped 22 October 2026 at 22:56 UTC through Steam; Valve's release notes contain a single [ MAP SCRIPTING ] section and nothing else.
  • New scripting hooks: Instance.Precache returns a CSPrecache object with server and client load-state checks, a CSHostage class exposes pick-up, carry and rescue state with matching Instance events, and CSPlayerPawn.GetHostage is added.
  • Two new top-level exports: Console (convar getters, a SetConvar that is not restricted by sv_cheats, Console.Log replacing Instance.Msg) and GameRules (start and end warmup, read and add team score, terminate the round). Moved and renamed methods still work in their old place, marked deprecated.
  • radar_element can now appear on the radar in every game mode, not only Rush; custom HUD layouts get HUD_TEAMMENU_VISIBLE and HUD_CHAT_VISIBLE classes; enum mismatches with point_script.d.ts and two boolean-return bugs are fixed; logged warnings now carry the JavaScript call stack.
  • For your rank: no balance, map-pool, Premier, Competitive, Wingman or VAC change — matchmaking plays exactly as it did before the update, and orders in progress are unaffected.
  • What we are watching: the next Valve release notes, the PGL Major Singapore field being set on 2 November, and any word on the Premier Season 5 end — our calendar's 11 January 2027 is an estimate, not an announcement.

What Valve shipped

Valve pushed a Counter-Strike 2 update on the evening of 22 October (22:56 UTC) with one section in the release notes: map scripting. It is written for Workshop creators who build custom maps and modes with CS2's point_script system, and it does not touch the game you queue for in Premier, Competitive or Wingman.

The new scripting hooks

  • Instance.Precache now returns a CSPrecache object that reports whether the server and the clients have finished loading, and can be released when it is no longer needed.
  • A CSHostage class exposes whether a hostage is being picked up, carried or rescued, who the rescuer is and when the pick-up started and finished; Instance gains events for pick-up start, abort, pick-up, drop, rescue and kill, and CSPlayerPawn.GetHostage returns the hostage a player carries.
  • A new top-level Console export reads convars as booleans, numbers, strings, vectors, angles or colours and can set them; Console.SetConvar runs synchronously and is not restricted by sv_cheats. Instance.Msg becomes Console.Log, and the client-command, server-command and cheat-command helpers move to Console.
  • A new top-level GameRules export can start and end warmup, read and add team score and terminate the round; the warmup, freeze-time, team-intro, round-count, round-time and team-money helpers move there too.
  • Everything that moved or was renamed still works in its old location, marked deprecated.

Smaller fixes

  • radar_element can appear on the radar in every game mode, not only in Rush.
  • Custom HUD layouts get HUD_TEAMMENU_VISIBLE and HUD_CHAT_VISIBLE classes.
  • GameRules.AddTeamMoney accepts CSTeamMoneyReason.NONE with an amount, and a crash on that path is fixed; the CSTeamMoneyReason and CSWeaponAttackType enums now match point_script.d.ts, and two visibility checks return booleans instead of numbers.
  • Logged warnings include the JavaScript call stack and details about bad argument values, and count arguments from 0; autocomplete for the map_workshop command is improved.

What it means for your climb

  • Nothing changes in ranked play: no weapon, movement, economy, map-pool, matchmaking or VAC change is in these notes.
  • Premier ratings, Competitive Skill Groups, Wingman ranks and FACEIT Elo carry on exactly as before, so an order placed today is played on the same game as yesterday.
  • Like every CS2 update it arrives as a Steam download, so expect a restart before your next match.
  • The long-term effect is richer scripted Workshop maps: warmup, round and economy control from a script makes practice servers and custom modes easier to build.

What we are watching

Valve has not announced an end date for Premier Season 5; our calendar carries 11 January 2027 as an estimate, not a confirmed date. Next on the CS2 calendar is the PGL Major Singapore field being set on 2 November. We will write up the next Valve release notes the day they land.

Valve sends a new wave of VACNet labeling invites and credits labelers for recent match-quality gains

Valve has sent out another wave of invites to the VACNet labeling portal, the invite-only site where selected CS2 players review short match clips to train the VACNet anti-cheat, and says the recent improvement in match quality is a direct result of that labeling. Selected players see a VACNet icon in-game, and anyone who did not get an invite can ask for one by direct-messaging the official CS2 account on X. For your Premier climb it is a sign that Valve’s anti-cheat is being fed more human verdicts — not a ban wave and not a ranked change.

CS2 update (14 Oct): demo viewer gets click-and-drag camera, AUG reload animations updated

Valve shipped a small Counter-Strike 2 update late on 14 October. It is mostly a quality-of-life pass for the demo and replay viewer — a download progress bar, click-and-drag camera controls and a free or chase camera while the demo is paused — plus AUG reload animations that now match the half-second-faster reload from last week. Nothing here touches weapon balance, maps or matchmaking, so your Premier rating and FACEIT Elo are unaffected; reviewing your own demos just gets easier.

Counter-Strike 2 Update

A small maintenance update: the AUG now reloads half a second faster, dropped defuse kits get a ping icon so teammates can find them, and Valve fixed the Desert Eagle's silent-reload sound, a buzzing soundscape bug in demo playback and more clipping spots on the Rush maps. Nothing here touches Premier ratings, FACEIT Elo, the active-duty map pool or anti-cheat, so your rank is unaffected; the AUG tweak is the only change you may feel in a round.
