Patch 26.20 Rundown: Riot explains the Worlds patch, holds back Varus and Fiddlesticks

Riot's gameplay lead Phroxzon has published his 24-minute rundown of patch 26.20, the patch Worlds 2026 is played on, and calls it a stabilisation patch after the bigger systems changes of 26.19. For your climb the message is that the Rocketbelt and Hexplate changes are meant to make mages and ranged bruisers pay for their defensive options, AP junglers get a push, and the top-lane and bot-lane nerfs are trims to the strongest blind picks rather than a shake-up. A Varus top change and a Fiddlesticks buff were held back; Varus is pencilled in for 26.21 or later.

  • 26.20 is framed as fine-tuning after 26.19's systems changes and is the patch Worlds 2026 is played on (Play-Ins start 15 October).
  • Rocketbelt is an intended power-neutral change: mid-lane mages were buying it as an all-round AP-haste item for offence and defence, so the trade-off is now steeper — it should still be right when you need the dash or the active damage.
  • Hexplate's ranged nerf targets picks like Vayne that got durability and damage from one item; a Varus top change aimed at his durable Dusk-and-Dawn style builds was considered but pushed to 26.21 or later.
  • AP junglers are buffed to be more viable going into Worlds, but Riot says AD fighter items and the lack of AD mid pairings still hold them back — expect them late in drafts, not everywhere.
  • Top lane: small nerfs to Ambessa (damage moves from her passive into abilities she has to land) and K'Sante (W weaker early). Bot lane: Ashe loses damage so she is a utility pick, Cassiopeia loses 30 base mana to open her early lane, Yunara's W slow-stacking bug is fixed and her Q passive damage is trimmed by roughly 2 AD.
  • On X, Phroxzon added that a planned Fiddlesticks buff was pulled because he turned out to be in a decent spot, and that he will try to publish the 26.21 rundown the day before that patch goes live on 21 October.

A stabilisation patch for Worlds

Phroxzon opens by calling 26.20 a fine-tuning patch: 26.19 carried the bigger systems changes, and the aim of the Worlds patch was to settle the game, trim the champions at the top of each role and lift a few at the bottom. The video went up on 9 October, two days after the patch reached live servers, and the three systems changes get most of the airtime.

Items: paying for defence

  • Rocketbelt was being bought by conventional mid-lane mages as a versatile AP-haste item that served both offence and defence. The change (haste 20 to 10 in the notes) is meant to be power-neutral but makes the purchase a real trade-off; it should still be right on champions that need the dash or the active damage.
  • Hexplate's ranged nerf is about champions like Vayne getting durability and damage from one item; Riot thinks builds such as Essence Reaver or Trinity Force leave more room for counterplay.
  • Runaan's Hurricane was trimmed in the same pass as Ashe and Yunara so that no single bot-lane pairing dominates the patch.

Nerfs are trims, not reworks

Ambessa and K'Sante are described as small nerfs to the pickiest top laners: Ambessa's power moves out of her passive and into abilities she has to land, and K'Sante's W is less effective early. Ashe loses damage because Ashe–Seraphine would otherwise have been the strongest blind pairing on the patch. Cassiopeia gives up 30 base mana so a missed Q can cost her the early kill, and Yunara gets a slow-stacking bug fix on her W plus a cut to her Q passive damage that Riot equates to about 2 AD.

What was held back

A Varus top change, aimed at his durable Dusk-and-Dawn style builds, was considered and is still planned, but Riot did not want the risk on the Worlds patch and moved it to 26.21 or later. In his X post Phroxzon added that a Fiddlesticks buff was pulled because, on a closer look, the champion was already in a decent spot.

What it means for your climb

Nothing here changes who is viable: the nerfed champions stay playable, AP junglers such as Diana and Lillia are worth a look, and the patch you queue on today is the one the pros play at Worlds. Patch 26.21 lands on 21 October; Phroxzon says he will try to release its rundown the day before.

League Classic adds Aatrox, Caitlyn, Irelia, Karma and Quinn

Riot's 8 October update brings five more original-era champions to League of Legends Classic — Aatrox, Caitlyn, Irelia, Karma and Quinn — and the official roster page now lists 77 of them. Classic is its own mode with its own old-school kits, so none of this changes the champions you face in regular ranked; it only matters if you queue Classic for a change of pace.

Riot delays private replays to patch 26.21

Riot pulled the private-replay restriction from patch 26.20 on patch day and moved it to patch 26.21 on 21 October, so until then other players and third-party sites can still download your replays. Riot says it wants a solution for creators and coaches who rely on replays in place before the restriction lands; reviewing your own games through the client is not affected either way. The separate block on third-party apps reading game memory (overlays and trackers that bypass the official API) began on 6 October, with approved tools on a grace period until April 2027.

League of Legends patch 26.20 is live

Patch 26.20 went live on 7 October as the Worlds patch: pro staples Ambessa and K'Sante are nerfed, a long list of fringe picks (Kennen, Kindred, Swain, Smolder, Neeko, Mordekaiser, Lucian, Vayne, Tahm Kench) gets buffs, and Hextech Rocketbelt, Runaan's Hurricane and Experimental Hexplate are trimmed. The private-replay change written into these notes was pulled on patch day and pushed to 26.21, while Ranked 5s queue windows now run 4 pm to 4 am server time. For your climb it is a quiet patch on the Rift, targeted tuning rather than a meta shake-up, and it runs until patch 26.21 on 21 October.
