How to Climb as Support in LoL (2026): Lane, Role Quest and Game Plan

How to climb as a support in 2026: what the support item and its Role Quest give, vision with 40-gold Control Wards, when to roam, setting up drakes and picks, and why support is one of the easiest roles to get in the queue.

Updated 2026-10-24 · 9 min read · by the BoostPirate crew
  • Quest: 800 quest gold
  • Control Wards: 40 gold
  • Bounty of Worlds upgrade
  • Priority role for autofill

Supports don't need farm to decide games. They see the map for their team, start or stop fights, protect their carry and set up every objective — and they get their role more often than almost anyone, because Riot names Support a priority role for autofill. In 2026 the support item carries its own Role Quest that ends in a free item upgrade and cheaper Control Wards. This guide covers the quest, vision, laning with your ADC, roaming and playing drakes and picks.

Short answer: climb as support by owning vision — wards where the next fight will be, Control Wards now cost 40 gold after your quest — trading when your ADC can follow, roaming when your lane is pushed and safe, and setting up the drake at 5:00 and every one after. Your quest counts the 800 gold you earn through the support item and gives bounty of worlds upgrade · 40-gold control wards.
Key takeaways
  • Support's quest: 800 quest gold → Runic Compass becomes Bounty of Worlds with a free Upgrade for one of five items; Control Wards cost 40 gold and two can sit in the Role Quest slot.
  • Vision wins games — at every rank, the team that sees more fights better.
  • Support and Jungle are Riot's priority roles — the easiest way to get your pick in the queue.
  • Roam only from a pushed lane — never leave your ADC alone with a wave on your side.
  • Engage or protect? Know which job your champion does, and play the draft accordingly.

The support's job

A support makes the other four better. In lane, you trade so your ADC can farm, and you decide when your duo fights. Around the map you place the wards that let your team see the enemy coming, clear the enemy's, and arrive early at objectives. In fights you either engage — start the fight on your terms — or protect your carries from the enemy's engage. Kill participation and vision tell you more about a support's game than the scoreboard.

Your Role Quest: Bounty of Worlds and 40-gold Control Wards

Support's quest works differently from the laners': your points are the gold you earn through the support item quest (World Atlas, then Runic Compass) — 800 of it. When it's done, Runic Compass becomes Bounty of Worlds with a free Upgrade for one of five items; Control Wards cost 40 gold and two can sit in the Role Quest slot. Cheaper, storable Control Wards make it easy to keep a ward in every key bush; the free upgrade is a full item's worth of value. Patch 26.16 changed the support quest values — the Role Quests guide keeps every change.

Support game plan for League of Legends 2026: trade when your ADC can follow, ward the river and tri-bush, finish the 800-gold support item Role Quest for Bounty of Worlds and 40-gold Control Wards, roam from a pushed lane, and set up the drake at 5:00 and picks

Vision: where to ward

  1. Ward where the next fight will be.

The river and the drake pit before a drake; the top side before the grubs at 8:00 and the Herald at 15:00.

  2. Keep a Control Ward down.

In the bush you walk past most. After your quest they cost 40 gold and you can store two.

  3. Clear before objectives.

Denying the enemy's vision is half of setting up a drake or Baron — sweep the pit's entrances a minute before.

  4. Ward deep when you're ahead.

Vision in the enemy jungle shows their jungler's path and makes picks possible.

Laning with your ADC

Trade when they last-hit

The enemy ADC walking up for a minion is your window. Hit them, then step back to your ADC.

Don't take the farm

Your gold comes from the support item. Every minion you take is gold your ADC needed.

Engage with a follow-up

Start fights when your ADC can add damage and the enemy has used a summoner spell or key ability.

Recall together

Leaving your ADC alone in a lane that's pushed towards your turret is how bot lanes die two-versus-one.

When to roam

Roam when your bot lane wave is crashing into the enemy turret and your ADC can farm safely: to mid for a gank, to the river to ward for your jungler, or with your jungler into the enemy's side before an objective. Come back before the next big wave arrives. A roam that leaves your ADC facing two enemies with a wave on their side costs more than it wins.

Drakes, picks and the Elder

The first drake spawns at 5:00 and the next 5:00 after each kill; a team's fourth drake brings its Dragon Soul and the Elder Dragon 6:00 later. Your job before each one: vision on your side of the pit, enemy wards cleared, your duo's wave pushed. In the mid game, look for picks — an enemy walking alone into your vision is a fight your team wins four against five.

FAQ

Common questions

Is support a good role to climb?
Yes — supports affect every fight and objective without needing farm, you get the role often because Riot names Support a priority role for autofill, and good vision wins games at every rank. It suits players who like shot-calling and setting up their teammates more than scoreboards.
What does the support Role Quest give?
Your points are the gold you earn through the support item quest — 800 of them. When it's done Runic Compass becomes Bounty of Worlds, which unlocks a free Upgrade for one of five items, and Control Wards cost 40 gold with two stored in the Role Quest slot (official wiki, patch 26.21).
Where should a support place wards?
Where the next fight will be: the river and the drake pit before a drake, the enemy jungle entrance on the side your jungler is going, and a Control Ward in a bush you'll walk past often. Clear the enemy's wards before an objective — denying their vision is half the job.
When should a support roam?
When your bot lane wave is pushing into the enemy turret and your ADC can farm safely, towards mid or to ward the enemy jungle before an objective. Don't leave an ADC alone in a lane that's pushed towards your turret — that's how they die.
