CS2 Premier vs Competitive: Every Difference and Which to Play (2026)

Premier and Competitive play the same MR12 matches but run two different ladders. How the rank, the maps, placements, seasons and leaderboards differ β€” and which mode suits you.

Updated 2026-10-25 Β· 8 min read Β· by the BoostPirate crew
  • Premier: one CS Rating
  • Competitive: rank per map
  • Premier: map picks
  • Both MR12

CS2 has two ranked 5v5 modes, and they look alike from the outside: the same maps, the same MR12 format, the same weapons. Underneath they run very different ladders. Premier gives you one number across the season's map pool, with map picks, seasons and leaderboards; Competitive gives you a separate rank on every map and lets you choose where to play. This guide compares the two point by point β€” including Premier's new map-pick system from September 2026 β€” and helps you pick the one that suits you. Checked 2026-10-25.

Short answer: Premier ranks you with one CS Rating across the 7-map Active Duty pool, picked by the teams and then drawn at random, with seasons, leaderboards and a medal. Competitive gives you a Skill Group on each map (Silver I to Global Elite) and you choose the maps. Premier shows your rating after 10 wins; Competitive reveals a map's rank after 2 wins on it. Both play first to 13.
Key takeaways
  • One number vs seven ranks: Premier's CS Rating covers the whole pool; Competitive ranks each map separately.
  • Maps: Premier teams pick four maps and one is drawn at random (since 22 September 2026); Competitive lets you choose.
  • Reveal: 10 wins in Premier, 2 wins per map in Competitive (since 25 June 2024).
  • Seasons and leaderboards are Premier only.
  • Same match format: MR12, first to 13, overtime of 6 rounds.

How maps are chosen

This is the biggest change of 2026. Until September, Premier teams voted to ban maps down to one. Valve's Rush Hour update on 22 September 2026 replaced that with picks:

  1. Team 1 picks one map.
  2. Team 2 picks two maps.
  3. Team 1 picks a final map.
  4. One of the four is drawn at random and the match starts.

So each team gets maps it wants into the draw, and neither knows which one will be played. Season 5's Active Duty pool is Ancient, Anubis, Cache, Dust II, Inferno, Mirage, Nuke β€” Cache came back in place of Overpass on 8 July 2026. In Competitive there's no draw: you tick the maps you want to queue for, including maps outside the Premier pool. The map pool guide has the full list.

How your rank works in each mode

Premier: CS Rating

A single number that rises and falls with each win and loss; you see the expected change during the team intros. Every 5,000 points brings a new colour, and promotion or relegation matches happen only at those lines. Valve recalibrated every rating when Season Two began.

Competitive: Skill Groups

Eighteen ranks from Silver I to The Global Elite, kept separately on every map. A map's rank appears after 2 wins there and can expire if you stop playing it β€” see the rank decay guide.

Premier's colours are the ranks most players compare β€” the Premier ranks guide covers each one, and the Competitive ranks guide shows all eighteen Skill Groups.

Seasons, medals and leaderboards

Premier runs in seasons of roughly six months. Each season has its own medal, upgraded as you win β€” 25 wins earn the first version β€” and three leaderboards: friends, your region and the world. Competitive has none of that; your Skill Groups simply carry on. The season medal guide explains colours and bars.

Separate ladders, separate requirements

Your Premier rating and your Competitive Skill Groups are kept apart β€” winning a Competitive match on Mirage doesn't move your CS Rating, and a Premier win doesn't touch your Mirage Skill Group. Wingman runs a third ladder of its own. Premier also has an entry requirement: Prime and Profile Rank 10, which takes most new Prime players a few weeks of XP (how to unlock Premier).

  • 7maps in the Premier pool (Season 5)
  • 10wins before your CS Rating shows
  • 2wins per map before a Skill Group shows
  • 13rounds to win a match in both modes

Which should you play?

Play Premier if…

  • you want one number to climb and compare
  • you like leaderboards and a season medal
  • you're happy to play any map in the pool

Play Competitive if…

  • you're learning maps one at a time
  • you want maps outside the Premier pool
  • you want a rank that isn't tied to a season

Many players use both: Competitive to learn a new map without risking their rating, Premier for the number that counts. FACEIT is a third option with its own ladder β€” compared in Premier vs FACEIT.
