- Premier: parties of 1β5
- Wingman: 2
- FACEIT Super: 400 Elo
- Workshop: Open Party
Few things kill a night of CS2 faster than "your party can't queue this mode". The rules behind that message are split between Valve and FACEIT, and only some of them are written down. This guide collects what each queue allows β party sizes, rank-gap limits, the FACEIT 400-Elo rule β marks clearly where nobody publishes a number, and covers the ways to play with a friend who's far above or below you. Checked 2026-10-25.
- Premier: 1β5 players β parties of four since 8 November 2023.
- Premier's gap limit is real but unpublished; Valve last adjusted it on 6 February 2025.
- Competitive and Wingman: Valve publishes no rank-gap rule.
- FACEIT: no limits in the standard queue; 400 Elo in Super and Premium Match.
- Workshop maps: turn on Open Party and friends join your game straight from the Friends list.
Party rules for every queue
| Queue | Party size | Rank-gap rule |
|---|---|---|
| Premier | 1 to 5 (parties of four since 8 November 2023) | A CS Rating gap limit exists β Valve adjusted it on 6 February 2025 but publishes no number |
| Competitive | 1 to 5 | No Skill Group gap rule published by Valve |
| Wingman | 1 or 2 (it's a 2v2 mode) | No gap rule published |
| FACEIT matchmaking | any size | No party Elo limit in the standard queue |
| FACEIT Super / Premium Match | 1β3 (Super), 1β2 (Premium) | No more than 400 Elo between party members |
Premier: up to five, with a hidden gap limit
Premier launched for solo players and full stacks; since 8 November 2023 parties of four can queue too, so any size from one to five works. What Valve hasn't published is how far apart you can be. Its 6 February 2025 update "adjusted the logic that determines when players are too far apart in CS Rating" and said most players who partied together in Premier Season One would be able to party together β but there's no number. If the game refuses your party, the gap is the reason; the only fix is a closer rating or a different mode.
Two things are worth knowing. Premier needs every player to have unlocked it (Prime and Profile Rank 10 β see how to unlock Premier), and your expected rating change is shown at the start of the match, so a big favourite stack gains little from a win.
Competitive and Wingman
Competitive runs a separate Skill Group on each map. Valve publishes no rank-gap rule for it β the old "within so many ranks" rule people quote from CS:GO was never an official number either. Wingman is 2v2, so the party is you and one friend; again, no published gap rule. If one mode refuses, try the other or a different map: your Skill Groups differ map by map.
FACEIT parties and the 400-Elo rule
FACEIT is clearer. In the standard 5v5 queue "there are no restrictions on party size or party Elo". The subscriber queues are stricter:
- Anyparty size in the free standard queue
- 1β3players in a Super Match party
- 1β2players in a Premium Match party
- 400the most Elo apart in Super and Premium Match
Parties with a player above 2,800 Elo may go past 400 β with an Elo penalty that grows the further they go β and Level 1 and Level 10 players can occasionally exceed it. An old FACEIT FAQ still mentions an 800-Elo limit; that came from a 2023 test and is out of date.
A party also changes what you win: FACEIT's Elo maths applies extra weights when a pre-made party has a wide skill spread, and if a party member leaves, the rest of the party takes the full loss β the 50% cushion only applies to solo teammates.
Playing with a friend far above or below you
Pick the mode that allows it
FACEIT's standard queue has no Elo limit at all; Competitive has no published gap rule. Both are better bets than Premier for a wide gap.
Play a Workshop map together
Since Valve's 18 March 2026 update, start a Workshop map with Open Party on and friends join from the Friends list β aim maps, retakes or custom modes.
Don't de-rank or smurf
Playing a lower account to match a friend is smurfing β FACEIT hands out permanent bans for it, and it ruins ten other players' match.
Close the gap instead
Climb toward your friends β with coaching, or with a booster when you'd rather spend the time playing together.
Playing with a high-rated player on purpose
Queuing with a much better player is also how a duo boost works: you play on your own account and the booster plays next to you in your lobby, so the same party limits apply. On Premier that means the gap has to fit Valve's hidden limit; on FACEIT, the standard queue takes any gap. Our Pro Teammate service books a high-rated player for a set number of matches, and the duo vs piloted guide compares it with a piloted boost.
