- Quest: 1,200 points
- Reward: level-20 cap
- Unleashed Teleport: 390 s
- Grubs 8:00 · Herald 15:00
Top lane is League's island: the longest lane on the map, one opponent for most of the game, and a jungler who often has better places to be. That makes it the most self-reliant role — and in 2026 the most rewarded for staying put, because the top Role Quest lifts your level cap to 20 and hands you Unleashed Teleport. This guide covers how to win the lane, how to use the quest, how to play Voidgrubs and the Herald on your side of the map, and how to turn a lead into wins.
- Top's quest: Level 20 cap · bonus XP · Unleashed Teleport — 1,200 points, earned mostly in lane.
- The longest lane gives the most room to freeze — and punishes a bad push the most.
- Grubs at 8:00, Herald at 15:00: both on your side, both once per game.
- Teleport changes fights — with the quest, Unleashed Teleport is on a 390-second cooldown.
- Two or three champions that cover each other's bad matchups.
The top laner's job
Top laners do two things: win a one-on-one lane, and then create pressure the enemy team has to answer. In lane that means farming safely and trading when the odds are yours. Later it means either holding the front line in team fights or split-pushing — pushing a side lane hard enough that one or two enemies must come to stop you, leaving your team to fight four against three or take an objective. Because top sits far from bot lane's drakes, the top side's objectives — Voidgrubs and the Rift Herald — are where a top laner's priority pays off.
Laning: trades, waves and the freeze
Trade on their cooldowns
Hit your opponent when they've just used a key ability or walked up to last-hit a minion. Back off when their cooldowns are up. Short trades you win add up to a kill threat.
Mind the minions
Fighting inside the enemy wave means their minions hit you too. Trade when your wave is bigger, never when theirs is.
Freeze when ahead
Hold the wave just outside your turret: your opponent must walk into your half to farm. See the wave management guide.
Crash before you recall
Push the wave into their turret, then go. Recalling with a wave heading to you loses it under your turret.
Your Role Quest: level 20 and Unleashed Teleport
Top's quest needs 1,200 points. Top, Mid and Bot earn 1.5 points a second in their assigned lane from 1:05 (1 point every 3 seconds elsewhere), paused for 12 seconds after a Recall; each minion is worth 2 points, a takedown 15, a plate 40, a turret 50 and an epic monster assist 30. When it's done you get level cap 20, +600 XP, 11% bonus XP and 80 bonus XP per takedown, plus Unleashed Teleport (390 s) — with Teleport already equipped you get a shield on arrival instead and 30 s off its cooldown. Points earned outside your lane are cut by up to 75% early on, so the quest rewards a top laner who stays in lane — and every two minutes there earns a minute of free roaming for a grub fight or a gank on mid.
The two biggest effects are late: a level-20 cap means you keep scaling after everyone else stops at 18, and Unleashed Teleport lets you join a drake or Baron fight from a side lane. Patches 26.12 and 26.19 tuned the Teleport shield and cooldown — the Role Quests guide tracks every change.
Voidgrubs, the Herald and the top side
Three Voidgrubs spawn once at 8:00 in the top-side pit and leave at 14:45; they give your team bonus damage to structures. The Rift Herald spawns once at 15:00 in the Baron pit, leaves at 19:45, and its Eye summons a Herald that charges a turret. Push your wave about 30 seconds before each spawns so you can move first and your opponent has to choose between farm and the fight. When Baron arrives at 20:00, the top laner is usually the closest teammate — keep your Teleport for it.
Mid game: split-push or group?
- Know your champion's job.
Duellists split-push; tanks and engage champions group for objectives. Pick one per game, based on the draft.
- Split with vision and an exit.
Push a side lane only when you know where the enemy jungler is, and leave before two enemies arrive.
- Time the split with your team's objective.
Push bot side before your team takes Baron, or top side before a drake — make them split their defence.
- Teleport in, don't walk in.
Your Teleport is the reason you can split: keep it for the fight that decides the game.
Building a top lane champion pool
Top has more counter-picking than any other lane, because one opponent decides your whole laning phase. A good pool is two or three champions that cover each other: for example one tank who survives bad matchups and one duellist who wins good ones. Learn their matchups in normals; in ranked, play the one that's safest against what the enemy picked. A champion you've played a hundred times beats a counter-pick you've played five.
Common top lane mistakes
Pushing with no vision
The longest lane is the easiest to gank. Ward the river and the tri-bush before you push past the middle.
Fighting the enemy wave
Trading inside a bigger enemy wave loses even trades you should win.
Roaming before the quest
Early roams cost quest progress. Push, then use the roaming allowance.
Wasting Teleport
Teleporting back to lane after a recall leaves you without it for the drake fight.
