How to Rank Up in VALORANT (2026): RR, Rank Shields and a Climb Plan

How RR and hidden MMR move from Iron to Ascendant, Rank Shields and demotion, the games a rank really takes at your win rate, and a solo-queue climb plan: account checks, agent pool, round habits and when to stop.

  • 100 RR to rank up
  • 2 Rank Shields per new rank
  • No rank decay
  • AFK or dodge: βˆ’6 to βˆ’24 RR

Ranking up in VALORANT comes down to two numbers: the Rank Rating (RR) you see after every game and the hidden matchmaking rating (MMR) behind it. This guide explains how both move under the rules Riot publishes for V26 // Act VI, works out how many games a rank really takes at your win rate, and gives you a climb plan that works in solo queue: the account checks, the agent pool, the habits that win rounds and the moments to stop queueing.

Short answer: from Iron to Ascendant you need 100 RR to promote, and you start the next tier with at least 10 RR. You demote only after a loss at 0 RR, and land on 70 RR or more. Winning is the biggest factor; your hidden MMR decides how much a win or loss is worth. Climb with a win rate above 50%, a small agent pool and no tilt queues β€” and keep your MMR above your rank so wins pay more than losses cost.
Key takeaways
  • 100 RR promotes, a loss at 0 RR demotes, and you never land below 70 RR after a demotion.
  • Two Rank Shields arrive every time you enter Tier 1 of a rank, from Iron to Ascendant β€” they stop one drop to the rank below.
  • MMR above your rank means bigger gains than losses; MMR below it means the opposite.
  • No rank decay: a week off costs you nothing.
  • An AFK or dodge costs 6–24 RR, so a dodge is never a free way out of a bad lobby.

How RR works from Iron to Ascendant

The ladder has nine ranks β€” Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Ascendant and Immortal with three tiers each, then Radiant β€” so 25 steps in all. From Iron 1 to Ascendant 3 every tier is a 0–100 RR bar, and Riot's support article sets the rules:

  • Promotion: reach 100 RR and you move up a tier, starting with a buffer of at least 10 RR so one bad game does not send you straight back.
  • Demotion: you have to sit at 0 RR and lose again. The lowest you can land in the tier below is 70 RR.
  • Rank Shields: each time you enter Tier 1 of a rank β€” Bronze 1, Silver 1 and so on β€” you get 2 shields. A loss at 0 RR then uses a shield instead of dropping you to the rank below. Shields do not stop a drop between tiers of the same rank (Silver 2 to Silver 1), and dodging or remaking a match never uses one.
  • No decay: Riot's Competitive FAQ is plain that ranks do not decay, however long you stay away.

What sets the size of each gain or loss? Riot says winning or losing has the largest effect. How much you win by, standout plays and being the underdog matter less, and it is your own performance that is judged, not your teammates'. Behind it all sits your MMR: when it is higher than your rank you gain more on a win than you lose on a loss, and when it is lower the reverse is true. Patch 12.00 in January 2026 changed how that hidden MMR is calculated to improve match quality. Immortal and Radiant work differently β€” a leaderboard RR with regional thresholds β€” which our Immortal and Radiant guide covers.

The arithmetic: games per rank at your win rate

Riot does not publish fixed RR values, so the table below is plain arithmetic, not a Riot figure: the games one tier (100 RR) takes at a given RR per win and per loss. It shows why win rate and MMR matter more than the number of hours you play.

RR per win / per loss50% wins55% wins60% wins
Gains match losses
+20 / βˆ’20
no climb~50 games~25 games
MMR above your rank
+25 / βˆ’15
~20 games~15 games~12 games
MMR below your rank
+15 / βˆ’25
no climbno climbno climb

Two lessons fall out of it. At even gains and losses a 50% win rate goes nowhere, and going from 55% to 60% wins halves the games a tier takes. And with your MMR below your rank you can win 60% of your games and still lose RR β€” the fix is to keep winning until the gains outgrow the losses, not to queue more. Type your own numbers into the free VALORANT RR calculator to see the wins you need, and read RR and MMR explained for the full mechanics.

VALORANT climb plan for 2026: 100 RR promotes with at least a 10 RR buffer, a loss at 0 RR demotes and you land on 70 RR or more, two Rank Shields when you enter Tier 1 of a rank from Iron to Ascendant, no rank decay, and AFK or dodge costs 6 to 24 RR. Illustrative arithmetic: at plus 20 and minus 20 RR a tier takes about 50 games at 55% wins and 25 games at 60%; at plus 25 and minus 15 it takes 20, 15 and 12 games at 50, 55 and 60% wins
One tier is 100 RR. Win rate and the MMR behind your RR decide how many games that takes β€” the game counts are arithmetic, not Riot figures.Graphic: BoostPirate

Before you queue: the account checklist

  1. Account Level 20.

Riot requires it for Competitive; accounts that played ranked before Episode 4 are exempt.

  2. Riot Mobile verification at Ascendant.

From Ascendant up, Competitive needs Riot Mobile multi-factor authentication β€” in NA, LATAM, BR and KR since 2025, in EU since patch 12.01 and in AP since 12.03. Set it up before you promote, not in the middle of a good night.

  3. Settings that stay the same.

Lock your sensitivity and crosshair and stop changing them between games. Our crosshair and sensitivity guide and the sensitivity converter help if you are coming from another shooter.

  4. Know the seven maps.

The V26 // Act VI Competitive pool is Abyss, Bind, Corrode, Haven, Lotus, Summit and Sunset β€” Bind and Corrode came in with patch 13.08, Ascent and Split went out. Learn one attack plan and one defensive setup per map.

Pick two roles and a small agent pool

Agent select in solo queue is a lottery: you will not always get your first pick. Learn two roles well and two or three agents in each, and you can fill whatever the lobby is missing without playing something you have never practised. A team without a Controller has no smokes to execute or retake with, so a Controller is the most useful second role for most players. Our agent roles guide lists all 30 agents by role, and the best agents for solo queue picks the kits that carry without a coordinated team.

Habits that win rounds in solo queue

Trade your teammates

Play close enough to the player in front of you to shoot their killer. A traded death is an even round; an untraded one is a 4v5.

Use your utility for someone

A flash or a smoke thrown for a teammate's push wins more rounds than one saved for a perfect moment that never comes. Say what you are throwing before you throw it.

Buy with the team

One player full-buying while four save loses both rounds. Follow the team's call, and learn the basics in our economy guide.

Play the Spike

On attack the round is about planting and holding the plant, not about kills. On defence, the round ends when the Spike is defused or the attackers are dead β€” not when you get your third kill.

Riot's Performance Score (0–500), which replaced ACS in patch 13.06, and the private Map Rating added in 13.08 are useful mirrors: the post-game breakdown shows what lifted or dragged your score. Riot describes them as what picks the MVP, orders the scoreboard and tracks your form on each map; it has not said that either one moves your RR.

Protect your RR: tilt, dodges, AFKs and remakes

  • Stop after two losses in a row. Losing streaks drag your MMR down with your RR. Come back fresh instead of chasing the RR back tonight.
  • Do not dodge. Riot's penalty table puts a Competitive AFK or queue dodge at 6 to 24 RR, and repeat offences escalate to queue timers and ranked restrictions β€” see our penalties and bans guide.
  • Vote the remake. If a teammate is AFK in the first round, a remake vote starts on its own and needs a majority of the rest of the team β€” three of the remaining four.
  • Lost to a cheater? Riot restores lost RR when the cheater is banned, up to a limit each Act.

Solo, duo or five-stack?

A friend who communicates is the simplest upgrade a solo player can make, but Competitive parties have rules: no four-player groups, rank limits for parties of two or three (from Platinum up, one rank apart at most β€” Platinum 2 with up to Diamond 2), solo, duo or five-stack only from Immortal 1, and an RR reduction for five-stacks that mix ranks. The full table is in our party rank restrictions guide.

When you want help with the climb

If the plan is right but the hours are not there, BoostPirate prices every option live from the same engine as checkout. A rank boost from Gold 1 to Platinum 1 is $13.77 today, about 2 days. Be clear about the trade-off: boosting is against Riot's terms, and Riot bans accounts for rank manipulation β€” the boosters and the boosted. Duo and coaching never share a password; a piloted order does, encrypted and deleted when the order closes.

  • Play every game yourself: a pro teammate in your party, on your own account.
  • Fix the habits: 1-on-1 coaching on your own replays.
  • For the rank itself: a rank boost to any tier up to Immortal 3.
Climb on your own terms. Queue with a verified pro teammate (orders from $4.00), book coaching (from $22.00 an hour), or price a rank boost β€” the booster is paid only after you approve the result. Boosting is against Riot's terms; read is VALORANT boosting safe? first.

FAQ

Common questions

How much RR do you need to rank up in VALORANT?
100 RR. From Iron to Ascendant every tier is a 0 to 100 RR bar; at 100 you promote and start the next tier with at least 10 RR as a buffer.
How do Rank Shields work?
Every time you enter Tier 1 of a rank (Bronze 1, Silver 1 and so on) you get two Rank Shields. A loss at 0 RR uses a shield instead of dropping you to the rank below. Shields do not stop drops between tiers of the same rank, and dodges or remakes never use one.
Why do I gain less RR than I lose?
Your hidden MMR is below your rank. Riot says that when MMR is lower than your rank you gain less on a win and lose more on a loss; keep winning and the gains grow as your MMR catches up.
Does VALORANT rank decay?
No. Riot says ranks do not decay. Immortal and Radiant players can slide on the leaderboard as others climb, but that is a change of position, not decay.
