VALORANT Agent Roles Explained (2026): All 30 Agents by Role

What Duelists, Initiators, Controllers and Sentinels do on attack and defence, all 30 agents by role up to Hush, the five newest agents, how teams combine the roles and how to pick yours.

Updated 2026-10-31 · 8 min read · by the BoostPirate crew
  • 30 agents, 4 roles
  • 9 Duelists
  • 7 Initiators · 7 Controllers
  • 7 Sentinels

Every VALORANT agent belongs to one of four roles, and a team that understands them wins rounds a team of five good aimers loses. This guide explains what Duelists, Initiators, Controllers and Sentinels are for, lists all 30 agents by role as of patch 13.09 — Hush, who joined on 27 October 2026, included — and shows how the roles fit together and how to choose yours.

Short answer: VALORANT has 30 agents in four roles. Duelists (9) take the first fights and get the opening kills; Initiators (7) set those fights up with flashes, stuns and reveals; Controllers (7) cut the map with smokes and walls; Sentinels (7) lock down sites and watch the flank. A balanced team has at least one Controller and one Initiator, and most add a Sentinel.
Key takeaways
  • 30 agents: 9 Duelists, 7 Initiators, 7 Controllers and 7 Sentinels.
  • The newest five are Tejo, Waylay, Veto, Miks and Hush — two or three a year, every role covered.
  • Controllers are the role a team can least do without: no smokes means no safe execute or retake.
  • No role queue: agent select is first come, so learn two roles.
  • Roles describe a job, not a rule — a Sentinel can entry and a Duelist can hold a flank, but the kit makes one job easier.

The four roles at a glance

Riot describes each role in the game itself: Duelists as "self-sufficient fraggers", Initiators as the agents who "challenge angles", Controllers as experts in "slicing up dangerous territory" and Sentinels as "defensive experts". In practice:

RoleWhat it is forTypical jobAgents
DuelistSelf-sufficient fraggers: they are expected to take fights and get the kills that open a site.Entry on attack, early picks and re-takes on defence.9
InitiatorThey challenge angles and set the team up to enter contested ground — flashes, stuns, reveals.Information before a push, clearing corners, supporting the entry.7
ControllerExperts at slicing up dangerous territory: smokes and walls that cut sightlines.Smokes for the execute on attack, delays and re-take smokes on defence.7
SentinelDefensive experts who lock down areas and watch flanks on attack and defence.Holding a site alone, watching the flank, slowing pushes.7

All 30 agents by role

Riot's agents page lists 30 playable agents after patch 13.09. By role:

RoleAgents
Duelists (9)Jett, Reyna, Raze, Phoenix, Yoru, Neon, Iso, Waylay, Hush
Initiators (7)Sova, Breach, Skye, KAY/O, Fade, Gekko, Tejo
Controllers (7)Brimstone, Viper, Omen, Astra, Harbor, Clove, Miks
Sentinels (7)Sage, Cypher, Killjoy, Chamber, Deadlock, Vyse, Veto

Agent numbers can confuse: Riot's internal numbering skipped an "Agent 8", so outlets that call Hush "agent 31" and those that call her the 30th playable agent are describing the same roster.

The four VALORANT agent roles in 2026: Duelists, 9 agents, take the first fights and get opening kills; Initiators, 7 agents, set up fights with flashes, stuns and reveals; Controllers, 7 agents, cut sightlines with smokes and walls; Sentinels, 7 agents, lock down sites and watch flanks. 30 agents in all after Hush joined on 27 October 2026. Newest agents: Tejo, Initiator, January 2025; Waylay, Duelist, March 2025; Veto, Sentinel, October 2025; Miks, Controller, March 2026; Hush, Duelist, October 2026.

What each role does on attack and on defence

Duelist

Attack: first through the door once the site is smoked and flashed, trading space for kills. Defence: aggressive early picks, then the first player back in on a retake. Dashes, teleports and self-heals are built for it.

Initiator

Attack: reveal where defenders are, flash or stun the corner, then follow the Duelist in. Defence: gather information early and lead the retake with the same tools.

Controller

Attack: smoke off the defenders' sightlines so the team can plant, then smoke for the post-plant. Defence: delay a push with smokes or walls, and smoke the retake.

Sentinel

Attack: watch the flank with traps and gadgets, then hold the plant. Defence: hold a site alone with setups that slow, reveal or trap attackers until help arrives.

  • Veto is a Sentinel who counters utility: Interceptor destroys enemy gadgets, grenades and walls, Chokehold traps enemies, and his ultimate makes him immune to debuffs such as flashes, stuns and slows.
  • Miks is a Controller with map-targeted smokes, a device that heals teammates or concusses enemies, a stim he shares with an ally, and a sonic-wave ultimate that knocks enemies back.
  • Hush is a Duelist with telekinesis: she picks up weapons and the Spike from range, pulls players into a grenade, flashes, anchors her movement and levitates everyone caught in her ultimate. Read the Hush agent guide for her full kit.

How the roles fit together

Riot sets no composition rules, but most teams build around the same skeleton and bend it per map:

  1. One Controller, always.

Smokes decide executes, post-plants and retakes. Bigger maps with long sightlines often take two.

  2. One Initiator, usually two.

Information and flashes make the Duelist's job possible. Two Initiators suit maps with tight entrances.

  3. One Sentinel.

A player who watches the flank on attack and anchors a site on defence; some teams drop it for a second Duelist on smaller maps.

  4. One or two Duelists.

Someone has to take the first fight. Two Duelists only work when the rest of the team is disciplined.

In solo queue, check agent select before you lock: a team with three Duelists and no Controller loses rounds before they start. Our best agents for solo queue guide picks two agents per role that work without a coordinated team, and the map pool guide covers how each map changes the mix.

Which role should you play?

You win aim duels

Duelist. Your job is to make space; the rest of the kit helps you get in and out.

You like making calls

Initiator or Controller. You see the round before anyone else and set it up for them.

You keep calm under pressure

Sentinel. Holding a site alone, then clutching the retake, rewards patience over speed.

You want to climb fast

Controller as a second role. Many players avoid it, so you will rarely be locked out of it, and a good one lifts the whole team.

There is no role queue in VALORANT, and Riot bans the automatic instalocking tools some players use to beat others to an agent — over 14,000 accounts in Act 5 of 2026 were banned for streamsniping or instalocking tools.
