How to Reach Master in LoL: LP, Cutoffs, Decay and Duo Rules (2026)

What it takes to get from Diamond to Master in League of Legends: how promotion works, the Grandmaster and Challenger cutoffs, apex decay, dodging and duo rules, and a realistic plan for the last tier.

Updated 2026-10-16 · 7 min read · by the BoostPirate crew
  • Master+: top 0.87%
  • Grandmaster: 400+ LP
  • Challenger: 800+ LP
  • Decay bank: 14 days

Master is where League of Legends stops being a ladder of divisions and becomes a ladder of LP. It's the first apex tier — no divisions, a fixed number of places above it, faster decay and stricter rules on dodging and duo. This guide explains how promotion from Diamond works, what Grandmaster and Challenger ask for, the apex rules that change how you climb, and a realistic plan for the last tier.

Short answer: reach 100 LP in Diamond I and you're promoted to Master straight away — the promotion series is gone. Master and above are about the top 0.87% of ranked Solo/Duo players (League of Graphs, patch 26.20). Grandmaster needs at least 400 LP and Challenger 800 LP, plus a place on your server's fixed ladder; apex players decay after 14 banked days, and a dodge costs a full loss.
Key takeaways
  • No series, no divisions: 100 LP in Diamond I promotes you; Master counts LP from 0 upwards.
  • Grandmaster and Challenger have seats. You need the LP minimum and more LP than the lowest player already there.
  • Decay starts sooner than in Diamond: a 14-day bank (Diamond: 28), then 75 LP a day.
  • Dodging costs a full loss from Master up (since patch 26.1).
  • Duo is narrow: Masters within 400 LP, or a Diamond I while you're under 200 LP.

How promotion to Master works

Riot removed tier promotion series in patch 13.14: when your LP reaches 100 in Diamond I, you're promoted to Master on the spot and start counting LP from 0. There are no divisions above Diamond — Master, Grandmaster and Challenger are one long LP ladder. A new Master gets 3 games of demotion protection; drop to 0 LP after that and you fall back to Diamond I.

The League of Legends apex ladder: Diamond I at 100 LP promotes to Master at 0 LP, Grandmaster needs at least 400 LP and a free seat on your server, Challenger at least 800 LP and a seat, with a 14-day decay bank, full-loss dodges and narrow duo rules above Diamond

Grandmaster and Challenger cutoffs

Riot gives each server a fixed number of Grandmaster and Challenger places in Solo/Duo. To get in you need at least 400 LP (Grandmaster) or 800 LP (Challenger) and more LP than the lowest player already in the tier. The apex ladder updates every 24 hours, at midnight local server time.

The apex rules that change the climb

Decay

Apex players start with 14 banked days, bank 1 per ranked game (max 14) and lose 75 LP a day once the bank is empty — down to Diamond II. Diamond banks up to 28 days. Plan breaks with the decay calculator.

Dodging

Since patch 26.1, a dodge from Master up costs the LP of a lost game — the old fixed penalty is gone. See dodge penalties.

Duo

Masters duo only with Masters within 400 LP, or with a Diamond I while under 200 LP; Grandmaster and Challenger play alone, and on the Korean server nobody queues with Master+. Check a pair in the duo checker.

Flex

No Flex rank restrictions for Diamond and below; to play with Master+ players you must be at least Emerald.

How long Diamond takes

Diamond is the slowest tier on the way up: our boosters average about 0.4 of a division a day there, so Diamond IV → Master takes about 10 days at our pace and Diamond IV → Diamond I 7–8 days. On your own it depends on your LP per win: if your gains are smaller than your losses, your MMR sits below your rank and the climb stalls — the LP gain checker shows where you stand.

A realistic plan for the last tier

  1. Two or three champions, one role.

At this level every opponent knows the matchups; mastery of a small pool beats flexibility.

  2. Track your LP split.

Bigger gains than losses mean your MMR is ahead of your rank — keep queuing. Smaller gains mean stop and fix the streak first.

  3. Never dodge casually.

From Master up a dodge costs a whole loss of LP. Settle champ-select issues by talking, not leaving.

  4. Keep the decay bank full.

One ranked game banks a day; a week off can cost LP the moment the bank runs dry.

  5. Review the games you lose.

Riot's replays expire when the next patch lands — watch them the same week. A coaching session speeds that up.

Help for the last step

  • Up to Diamond I: a Solo/Duo boost covers every division to Diamond I — the last step before Master.
  • Stuck below a promotion: net wins add wins over losses at your tier.
  • To hold Master yourself: 1-on-1 coaching with a Master+ player for your role.
  • Master and above: custom orders, priced by LP, server and the stage of the season — ask us for a quote.
Get to the door of Master. Price your climb to Diamond I on the Solo/Duo boost page (from $3.25$3.09 a division), or book a Master+ coach for the final tier.

FAQ

Common questions

How do you reach Master in LoL?
Win your way through Diamond: reach 100 LP in Diamond I and you're promoted to Master straight away — the promotion series is gone since 2023. Master and above are about the top 0.87% of ranked Solo/Duo players (League of Graphs, patch 26.20).
How much LP do you need for Grandmaster and Challenger?
At least 400 LP for Grandmaster and 800 LP for Challenger, and more LP than the lowest player already in the tier on your server — both tiers have a fixed number of places. Riot updates the apex ladder every 24 hours.
Do Master players decay?
Yes, faster than Diamond: apex players bank up to 14 days, one per ranked game, and lose 75 LP a day once the bank is empty; decay can drop you to Diamond II. Diamond banks up to 28 days.
Can you duo in Master?
Only with Masters within 400 LP of you, or with a Diamond I player while you're under 200 LP. Grandmaster and Challenger can't duo at all, and on the Korean server nobody can queue with Master+ players.
