LoL Laning Phase Guide: Level 2, Plates, Gold and XP (2026)

The League of Legends laning phase in numbers for 2026: the first minute, XP per level and when level 2 comes, what every minion is worth, permanent turret plates, kill gold, recalls and the habits that win lane.

Updated 2026-10-25 Β· 9 min read Β· by the BoostPirate crew
  • Minions at 0:30
  • Level 2: 280 XP
  • Plates: 120 gold, permanent
  • Kills: 300–420 gold

Most League of Legends games are decided in the first fourteen minutes β€” not by kills, but by who reaches level 2 first, who takes the plates, who keeps their wave and who recalls at the right time. The 2026 season changed the numbers behind all of that: minions arrive at 0:30, turret plates no longer fall off, inner turrets have plates of their own. This guide puts the laning phase into numbers on patch 26.21 β€” XP per level, minion gold and XP, plates, kill gold and recalls β€” and turns them into habits. Checked 2026-10-25.

Short answer: minions spawn at 0:30. A solo laner hits level 2 with the first melee minion of wave 2 (wave 1 gives 279 of the 280 XP needed); a duo lane needs 3 melee minions of wave 2. A melee minion is worth 20 gold, a caster 14, a cannon 50, +1 every 90 seconds. Turret plates pay 120 gold each and now stay all game. First blood is +100 gold; a kill is worth 300–420 by level.
Key takeaways
  • Level 2 first: solo lanes after one melee of wave 2, duo lanes after three.
  • Level 6 takes 2,400 XP β€” just over eight waves of solo minion XP.
  • Plates are permanent since 26.1: 5 plates of 120 gold, shrinking from 11:00.
  • Kill gold: 300 at levels 1–6, rising to 420 at 18.
  • Cannon minions every third wave from wave 3 β€” every second wave from 14:00.

The first minute

  1. 0:30

The first wave spawns: 3 melee and 3 caster minions per lane.

  2. 0:55

Blue, red, wolves and raptors spawn; Gromp and Krugs follow at 1:07.

  3. 1:05

    Passive gold starts ticking.

  4. 1:30

Wave 3 spawns with the first cannon minion.

  5. 2:55

The Scuttle Crabs appear in the river.

Top, Mid and Bot get 25% less minion gold and XP outside their own lane until level 3 β€” a 2026 rule that makes early lane swaps cost farm.

Minions give XP to every champion nearby, split between them: a solo laner gets 100% of each minion's XP, two champions get 65% each. That's why the bot lane levels slower than top and mid, and why a jungler sitting in your lane costs you XP.

The League of Legends laning phase in numbers on patch 26.21: wave 1 gives a solo laner 279 XP, one short of the 280 needed for level 2, so level 2 comes with the first melee minion of wave 2, while a duo lane needs three melee minions of wave 2; level 6 takes 2,400 XP in total; minions are worth 20 gold and 62 XP for a melee, 14 gold and 31 XP for a caster and 75 XP for a cannon; turret plates pay 120 gold, stay all game and lose 10 gold a minute from 11:00 down to 80; first blood pays 100 gold and kills 300 to 420

Waves spawn every 30 seconds, every 25 from 14:00 and every 20 from 30:00. A cannon comes every third wave early, every second wave from 14:00 and every wave from 25:00 β€” cannons are the minion to never miss. The CS per minute guide shows what a good score looks like.

Turret plates and first tower

  • 5plates on an outer turret
  • 120 ga plate β€” 10 gold less per plate each minute from 11:00, down to 80
  • 300 gfirst turret, shared by nearby players
  • 9,000health on an outer turret

The biggest 2026 laning change: plates stay for the whole game β€” they no longer fall off at 14:00, and inner and inhibitor turrets have plates too: 600 gold across 5 plates. A lane lead keeps paying all game, so pushing a won lane into the turret is worth more than it used to be β€” and losing a lane costs more too.

Kills, first blood and shutdowns

A kill is worth 300 gold at levels 1–6, plus 10 a level, up to 420 at level 18, and assists share up to 150–210 gold. First blood adds +100. Players who die repeatedly become cheaper to kill, and a player on a streak carries a shutdown bounty β€” so a fed laner is a target for the whole enemy team.

Recalls and resets

When to recall

  • Right after you push a wave into their turret
  • When you can afford a full component
  • Before an objective spawns, not during it

The numbers

  • Recall channels for 8 seconds
  • Homeguard: no fixed duration β€” ends at its endpoint, in combat or in the jungle; 80% speed before 14:00, 150% after
  • A remake vote is possible from 0:55 to 2:25 if a teammate is AFK

Laning habits that win

  1. Race to level 2.

Last-hit wave 1, then hit the first melee of wave 2 β€” and trade the moment you get there.

  2. Trade when they last-hit.

An enemy reaching for a minion can't dodge β€” that's your window.

  3. Push, then plate, then recall.

Plates stay all game now, so a crashed wave plus a plate is worth the trip.

  4. Manage the wave before roaming.

The wave management guide covers freezing and slow pushes.
