LoL Loss Streaks Explained: Is There a Losers' Queue? (2026)

Why five losses in a row happen to almost everyone, what Riot says about the losers' queue, how a losing run moves your MMR and LP, and a stop rule that keeps one bad night from becoming a bad week.

Updated 2026-10-24 · 7 min read · by the BoostPirate crew
  • 5 losses in a row at 50%: 81%
  • Riot: no losers' queue
  • Longest run in 100 games: ~6
  • LP follows MMR

Five losses in a row feel like proof that the queue has turned against you. They're usually proof of something duller: chance. A player who wins half their games will hit a five-game losing streak in most stretches of a hundred games, and a seven-game one over a long season. This guide shows the real odds, what Riot says about the "losers' queue", what a losing run actually does to your MMR and LP, and a stop rule that keeps one bad evening from becoming a bad week.

Short answer: at a 50% win rate, the chance of at least one five-game losing streak in 100 games is about 81%, and the longest losing run to expect is about 6 games. Riot says the losers' queue doesn't exist ("Losers queue doesn't exist" — Riot Phroxzon, League of Legends lead gameplay designer, on X, 11 February 2024). What a streak does change is your LP: your hidden MMR falls below your rank, so losses cost more until you win again. Stop after two losses in a row and come back fresh.
Key takeaways
  • Streaks are normal: 5 losses in a row in 100 games — 81% at 50%, 64.7% at 55%.
  • Over 300 games at 50%, a seven-game losing streak has a 69.5% chance.
  • No losers' queue: Riot's lead gameplay designer said so on X in February 2024.
  • LP follows MMR: after a losing run, losses cost more and wins pay less until it recovers.
  • Tilt is the real risk — the maths assumes every game is independent; an angry player isn't.

How often losing streaks happen by chance

Treat each ranked game as a coin weighted to your win rate. Over 100 games, the chance of seeing at least one run of losses of each length is:

Two things stand out. Even a 55% player — someone climbing steadily — has a 64.7% chance of a five-loss streak in 100 games. And the longest losing run to expect at 50% is about 6 games; at 55% it's about 5.3. A streak that long is the system behaving normally, not punishing you.

Chance of at least one losing streak in 100 League of Legends games by streak length, at 45, 50 and 55 percent win rates: a five-game losing streak about 81 percent at 50 percent and still likely at 55 percent, a ten-game streak rare

Is there a losers' queue?

The "losers' queue" theory says that after a few losses the game puts you with worse teammates to keep you near 50%. Riot has denied it directly: Losers queue doesn't exist — Riot Phroxzon, League of Legends lead gameplay designer, on X, 11 February 2024. Matchmaking builds each game around players' hidden MMR, and Riot Support explains that LP gains and losses then follow that MMR. The streak table above is why the theory survives: runs of losses are common enough by pure chance that everyone experiences them, and a run of losses is far more memorable than a run of wins.

What a losing streak does to your LP

MMR below rank

Riot Support: when your MMR drops below your rank, you lose more LP each defeat until your win rate levels out. That's why the seventh loss of a streak costs more LP than the first.

Win a few back

Win enough and the LP rewards grow — your MMR climbs back above your rank and gains beat losses again. The LP gain checker shows which side you're on.

Why tilt makes streaks longer

The odds above assume every game is independent — that you play your tenth game of the night exactly as well as your first. Most players don't. After two or three losses, frustration shows up as forced fights, flamed teammates and early surrender votes, and your real win rate for the next game drops below your normal one. That's how a chance streak of three becomes a self-made streak of seven.

A stop rule that works

  1. Two losses in a row: stop for the day.

Or at least for an hour. You lose nothing by not queueing; you can lose a lot by queueing angry.

  2. One game that made you angry: stop.

Even after a win. The next game inherits the mood.

  3. Mute early.

The /mute all command takes two seconds and removes most of what tilts people.

  4. Review one loss, not all of them.

Pick the game you felt you could have won and watch the first ten minutes — replays expire when the next patch lands.

  5. Check your LP split before queueing again.

If losses now cost much more than wins pay, a short run of wins in a calmer session repairs it fastest.

Turn a streak around

Reset the streak. Order net wins (from $1.60 a win) — a verified booster wins a fixed number of games at your tier while you take a break. Read is LoL boosting safe? first.

FAQ

Common questions

Is there a losers' queue in LoL?
Riot says no: "Losers queue doesn't exist" (Riot Phroxzon, League's lead gameplay designer, on X in February 2024). Matchmaking builds games around your hidden MMR; streaks are what a run of roughly even games looks like by chance.
How common is a 5-game losing streak?
Very. At a 50% win rate the chance of at least one five-game losing streak in 100 games is about 81%, and the longest losing run to expect is about 6 games. Even at 55% it's 64.7%.
Why do I lose more LP after a losing streak?
Riot Support: when your MMR drops below your rank you lose more LP each defeat until your win rate levels out. Win a few and the split recovers — the LP gain checker shows where you stand.
Should I stop playing after two losses?
It's a popular rule because tilt is real: frustrated players make worse decisions, and the streak maths assumes every game is independent. Stopping after two losses in a row, or after any game that made you angry, costs nothing and protects your MMR.
