  • 54 heroes
  • 15 Tank · 23 Damage · 16 Support
  • 9 new heroes in 2026
  • Sombra moved to Support

Overwatch's roster grew faster in 2026 than in any year since launch: nine new heroes in five seasons, and one veteran who changed roles. This page lists every hero in the game on 2 November 2026, in Reign of Talon Season 5, by role and by sub-role, with the official portraits, then covers the 2026 additions, the role changes and what is known about Hero 55.

Short answer: Overwatch has 54 heroes as of November 2026: 15 Tanks, 23 Damage heroes and 16 Supports, each in one of ten sub-roles. Nine joined in 2026: Domina, Emre, Anran, Mizuki and Jetpack Cat in Season 1, Sierra in Season 2, Shion in Season 3, D.Mon in Season 4 and Doctrine in Season 5. Sombra moved from Damage to Support on 6 October 2026. Hero 55 hasn't been officially revealed.
Key takeaways
  • 54 heroes: 15 Tank, 23 Damage, 16 Support. Role Queue fields one Tank, two Damage and two Support players.
  • Nine new heroes in 2026, at least one every season; Doctrine was introduced as Hero 54.
  • Sombra is a Support (Tactician) since Season 5, and her rework removed Hack.
  • Every hero has a sub-role passive, from Initiator Tanks to Survivor Supports.
  • Hero 55 is unannounced. A detective-style Omnic is a rumour, not a Blizzard announcement.

How many heroes Overwatch has

Blizzard's Hero Gallery, the heroes page on its website, lists 54 heroes (read on 1 and 2 November 2026), and Blizzard introduced Doctrine at BlizzCon as "Hero 54". By role:

The roles also differ in a few rules. Tanks get +150 bonus health in Role Queue. The sub-roles, added on 10 February 2026, each carry a passive; our sub-roles and perks guide lists every value.

  • Initiator (4): D.Va, Doomfist, Winston, Wrecking Ball. Healed for time in the air: 0.8 seconds airborne restores 75 health.
  • Bruiser (4): Mauga, Orisa, Roadhog, Zarya. Take 25% less critical damage and gain 20% speed at critical health.
  • Stalwart (7): D.Mon, Domina, Hazard, Junker Queen, Ramattra, Reinhardt, Sigma. Resist knockback and slows by 40%. Domina (Season 1) and D.Mon (Season 4) are the 2026 Tanks.

  • Specialist (7): Bastion, Emre, Junkrat, Mei, Soldier: 76, Symmetra, Torbjörn. An elimination gives 50% faster reloads for three seconds. Emre joined in Season 1.
  • Recon (4): Echo, Freja, Pharah, Sierra. Damaging an enemy below half health reveals them through walls for five seconds. Sierra joined in Season 2; Sombra left in Season 5.
  • Flanker (7): Anran, Genji, Reaper, Shion, Tracer, Vendetta, Venture. Health packs restore 75 extra health. Anran (Season 1) and Shion (Season 3) are the newest.
  • Sharpshooter (5): Ashe, Cassidy, Hanzo, Sojourn, Widowmaker. Critical hits cut movement-ability cooldowns.

  • Tactician (6): Ana, Baptiste, Jetpack Cat, Lúcio, Sombra, Zenyatta. Keep up to 25% extra ultimate charge after using an ultimate. Jetpack Cat arrived in Season 1 and Sombra moved here in Season 5.
  • Medic (4): Kiriko, Lifeweaver, Mercy, Moira. Weapon healing on allies heals you for 25% of it.
  • Survivor (6): Brigitte, Doctrine, Illari, Juno, Mizuki, Wuyang. A movement ability starts passive health regeneration. Mizuki (Season 1) and Doctrine (Season 5) are the newest.

Nine new heroes in 2026

The Reign of Talon year opened on 10 February 2026 with five heroes at once, and every season since has added one:

That makes four Damage heroes, three Supports and two Tanks in 2026, and moves the roster from 45 at the start of the year to 54.

The nine Overwatch heroes added in 2026 by season: Season 1 on 10 February brought Domina (Tank), Emre and Anran (Damage), Mizuki and Jetpack Cat (Support); Season 2 on 14 April Sierra (Damage); Season 3 on 16 June Shion (Damage); Season 4 on 11 August D.Mon (Tank); Season 5 on 6 October Doctrine (Support), when Sombra also moved to Support; the roster splits into 15 Tanks, 23 Damage heroes and 16 Supports

Role changes and reworks

  • Sombra portraitSombra moved to Support. Blizzard's 6 October 2026 notes moved her "from Damage to Support role" and "from Recon subrole to Tactician subrole". Her rework removed Hack.
  • Roadhog portraitRoadhog was reworked for Season 5. He is still a Tank; his Bruiser sub-role is the one Blizzard listed on 10 February.
  • Mei portraitMei played Tank in one Arcade mode. The Underwatch event of April 2026 made her a Tank in that mode only; in Competitive she is a Damage Specialist.

Hero roles matter for bans too: a match's regular bans can take no more than two heroes from one role, so Sombra's move changed which bans she competes with. Our hero bans guide explains how that works.

Hero 55 and what comes next

Blizzard hasn't revealed Hero 55. What is known, and how firm it is:

  • Season 6. Blizzard hasn't announced a date. Dexerto reported on 27 October 2026 that the in-game Battle Pass timer points to Tuesday 8 December 2026. Our season calendar tracks it.
  • The hero. The same report describes a rumoured Omnic detective. Blizzard has confirmed nothing, so treat it as a rumour.
  • The count. Dexerto, citing Blizzard's February Spotlight, says ten heroes were planned for 2026. Nine have shipped.
  • 2027. Blizzard said in February that a new Season 1 follows the six Reign of Talon seasons in 2027, and at BlizzCon that the Overwatch Spotlight returns in February 2027 with the next year's plans.

Which heroes to learn first

There is no single right roster, but the structure of the game points to a sensible order. Our advice:

  1. Pick a main role.

Damage has 23 heroes for two slots, Tank 15 for one. Every role you queue for in Competitive also needs its own placements.

  2. Learn one hero from each sub-role in it.

Two heroes in different sub-roles cover more maps and more enemy picks, and survive a ban on your main.

  3. Check the official numbers.

Blizzard's Hero Stats page shows pick, win and ban rates, filtered by input, tier (Emerald included), map and region, counted from the start of the latest patch. It is the only first-hand data on what works at your rank.

  4. Use the Hero Gallery filters.

The heroes page filters by role and sub-role, so you can see a sub-role's whole list at a glance.

Play your heroes with help

When you order a boost from us you can name up to 5 heroes you'd like played, and a duo teammate plays alongside your own picks. Five games with a Grandmaster+ teammate at Gold are $18.90 today, and an hour with a Grandmaster+ coach $19.90, priced by the same engine as checkout. Boosting conflicts with Blizzard's rules: its End User License Agreement forbids "account boosting or power-leveling, in exchange for payment", and an account can be actioned. Coaching stays inside the rules. Read the Risk Disclosure and is Overwatch boosting safe? first.

Overwatch boosting opens soon. Get the launch alert on the Overwatch page. The service pages already show live prices for a pro teammate (from $3.20 a game) and coaching.
