Overwatch Sub-Roles, Role Passives and Perks Explained (2026)

Every Overwatch sub-role and its passive, which heroes belong to each, what happened to the old Tank, Damage and Support passives, and how Perks level up mid-match, with every change through Season 5.

Updated 2026-11-02 · 10 min read · by the BoostPirate crew
  • 10 sub-roles since 10 Feb 2026
  • Tanks keep +150 HP in Role Queue
  • Perks: a Minor, then a Major
  • Sombra: Support since Season 5

On 10 February 2026, the day the Reign of Talon year began, Blizzard rebuilt the passives that come with each role. Tank, Damage and Support heroes were split into ten sub-roles, each with a passive of its own, and most of the old role-wide passives went away. Perks, the mid-match upgrades added a year earlier, were reworked in the same patch. This guide explains all of it as it stands on 2 November 2026, in Season 5: every sub-role with its passive and its heroes, what is left of the role passives, the changes since February, and how Perks level up.

Short answer: since 10 February 2026 every Overwatch hero belongs to one of ten sub-roles, each with its own passive. Tanks are Initiator, Bruiser or Stalwart; Damage heroes are Specialist, Recon, Flanker or Sharpshooter; Supports are Tactician, Medic or Survivor. Of the old role passives, Tanks keep +150 health in Role Queue and the reduced ultimate charge others gain from them, while the Damage healing reduction became baseline for everyone. Separately, every hero levels up Perks during a match: one of two Minor Perks, then one of two Major Perks.
Key takeaways
  • Ten sub-roles (3 Tank, 4 Damage, 3 Support), each with one passive.
  • Tanks keep +150 bonus health in Role Queue; their knockback and critical-damage resistance moved into Stalwart and Bruiser.
  • The 30% in-combat healing reduction now applies to every hero, not just Damage.
  • Sombra is a Support Tactician since 6 October 2026, and the four heroes added since April joined Recon, Flanker, Stalwart and Survivor.
  • Perks: a Minor, then a Major, earned by damage, eliminations and healing. Swapping starts the new hero at level 1.

Sub-roles in one minute

Blizzard's note on the change: "The role passive system has undergone a significant revision, introducing multiple categorized passives within each role." In practice your hero's sub-role decides which passive you get, so two heroes in the same role can now reward different habits: an Initiator Tank is healed for time in the air, a Stalwart shrugs off knockbacks.

What is left of the role passives

The sub-roles replaced most of what the three role passives used to do. Blizzard's 10 February 2026 notes, role by role:

RoleWhat stayedWhat moved or went
Tank+150 bonus health in Role Queue (unchanged). Healing and damage a Tank receives still grant 40% less ultimate charge (unchanged).Knockback resistance and critical-damage resistance left the role passive; Stalwart and Bruiser now carry them.
DamageThe effects, made baseline for all heroes: a 30% in-combat healing reduction, weaker against Tanks. The Damage role passive itself was removed.
SupportThe global health regeneration after 6 seconds, unchanged. The Support role passive was removed.

The +150 health applies in Role Queue only; Open Queue, where a team can field several Tanks or none, doesn't get it. Our Role Queue vs Open Queue guide compares the two.

Initiators are the Tanks that spend time airborne, and the passive pays them for it: 0.8 seconds off the ground heals 75 health over a second. Bruisers take 25% less critical damage and speed up by 20% at critical health, which helps a big target escape a bad fight. Stalwarts, the largest Tank group with seven heroes, resist knockback and slows by 40%, so they hold their ground. Two of them are 2026 heroes: Domina portraitDomina arrived with Season 1 on 10 February and D.Mon portraitD.Mon with Season 4 on 11 August. Specialists reload 50% faster for three seconds after an elimination, which rewards chaining fights. Recon heroes reveal any enemy they damage below half health through walls for five seconds, so a low target can't hide. Flankers get 75 extra health from health packs, which helps heroes who often play away from their Supports. Sharpshooters turn critical hits into faster movement cooldowns (0.75% of the damage dealt).

Four of the 2026 heroes are Damage heroes: Emre portraitEmre (Specialist) and Anran portraitAnran (Flanker) arrived with Season 1, Sierra portraitSierra joined Recon on 14 April and Shion portraitShion joined Flanker on 16 June. Shion's Major Perk Faces of Death grants her every other Damage sub-role passive, the clearest example yet of perks and sub-roles working together. Recon also lost a member: Sombra moved to Support on 6 October 2026.

Tacticians keep extra ultimate charge after using their ultimate, up to a 25% bonus, though charge builds 25% slower while they are above 100%; it suits Supports whose ultimates swing fights. Medics heal themselves for 25% of the healing their weapon deals to allies. Survivors start passive health regeneration whenever they use a movement ability.

Sombra portraitSombra is the newest Tactician: Blizzard's 6 October 2026 notes moved her "from Damage to Support role" and "from Recon subrole to Tactician subrole", and her rework removed Hack. Perks: how they work

Perks have been on in Quick Play and Competitive since 18 February 2025. Blizzard's rules:

  • You earn them in the match. "Perk progress is gained by dealing damage, securing eliminations, and healing your allies", and the rate "will gradually increase" as the match goes on. Eliminating an enemy at a higher perk level than you is worth more.
  • Minor, then Major. At your first level-up you choose one of two Minor Perks, at the next one of two Major Perks; Blizzard's own example has Tracer reaching level 3 and taking her Major Perk.
  • Swapping resets the new hero. "When you swap heroes, your new hero will be set to level 1 with zero perk progress", but progress is saved on heroes you already played in the round: swap back to Tracer and she is level 3 again, perks equipped.

The February 2026 patch reworked a long list of perks alongside the sub-roles. A few examples: Tracer lost Flashback and her Blink Packs moved from Minor to Major; Winston's Barrier Toss Minor Perk was removed; Hanzo gained a new Major Perk, Frost Arrow, an explosive arrow that slows enemies by 35% for three seconds. Stadium works differently: it uses Powers, granted in rounds 1, 2, 4 and 6 since 10 February 2026, which Blizzard called a Competitive format test.

Building a hero pool with sub-roles

Our advice, built on the passives above:

  1. Learn two sub-roles in your role.

Hero bans can remove up to two heroes from a role in one match. A backup from a different sub-role keeps you useful when a ban lands; our hero bans guide explains the limits.

  2. Play to the passive.

Flankers should route past health packs, Recon heroes should chase low targets the wall-hack reveals, and Tacticians can hold an ultimate a little longer without wasting charge.

  3. Pick Stalwarts into displacement.

Against heavy knockbacks and slows, the 40% resistance is the difference between holding a point and being moved off it.

  4. Plan your perks before the match.

Know which Minor and Major you want on each hero, so a level-up mid-fight costs no thought.

Help with your hero pool

Sub-roles reward players who know more than one hero, and that is what coaching is for. Coaching is also the option that stays inside Blizzard's rules. An hour with a Grandmaster+ coach is $19.90 today, and five games with a Grandmaster+ teammate at Platinum $24.30, priced by the same engine as checkout. Boosting conflicts with Blizzard's rules: its End User License Agreement forbids "account boosting or power-leveling, in exchange for payment", and an account can be actioned. Read the Risk Disclosure and is Overwatch boosting safe? before you order anything else.

Overwatch boosting opens soon. Get the launch alert on the Overwatch page. The service pages already show live prices for coaching (from $19.90 an hour) and a pro teammate.

FAQ

Common questions

What are sub-roles in Overwatch?
Groups inside each role, added on 10 February 2026, each with its own passive: Initiator, Bruiser and Stalwart for Tanks; Specialist, Recon, Flanker and Sharpshooter for Damage; Tactician, Medic and Survivor for Supports.
Which sub-role is Sombra in Overwatch?
Support, in the Tactician sub-role, since Season 5 began on 6 October 2026. Before that she was a Damage hero in Recon, and her rework removed Hack.
Do Tanks still have a role passive in Overwatch?
Partly. Tanks keep +150 bonus health in Role Queue, and the healing and damage they receive still grant 40% less ultimate charge. Their knockback and critical-damage resistance moved into the Stalwart and Bruiser sub-roles.
How do Perks work in Overwatch?
Dealing damage, getting eliminations and healing level your hero up during the match. You pick one of two Minor Perks, then one of two Major Perks. A hero you swap to starts at level 1, but heroes you already played keep their progress for the round.
