LoL Autofill Explained: Role Selection, Autofill Protection & Aegis of Valor (2026)

How League picks your ranked position in 2026 — primary, secondary and Fill, the Guaranteed, Possible and Carryover indicators, how long autofill protection lasts, what Aegis of Valor gives since patch 26.15, and how dodges and remakes interact with it.

  • 2 positions or Fill
  • Protection per queue
  • Aegis: double LP wins
  • Dodging won't reset it

Few things in League of Legends start a game worse than queueing mid and support and loading in as jungle. Autofill exists so games can start when the role queue is unbalanced — there are always more mid laners than supports — and in 2026 Riot changed a lot around it: queue indicators that warn you before the match, autofilled-vs-autofilled matchmaking, the Aegis of Valor bonus and new rules for dodging. Here is how position selection works on patch 26.20, straight from Riot's support pages and patch notes.

Short answer: you pick a primary and a secondary position (or Fill). Matchmaking tries your primary, then your secondary, and only autofills you into another role as a last resort. After an autofill Riot guarantees your primary or secondary for the next handful of games, tracked separately per queue. Since patch 26.15, winning an autofilled game with Aegis of Valor gives double LP for a win, and dodging no longer resets your autofill status.
Key takeaways
  • Neither pick is guaranteed — Riot says autofill can be reduced, never fully avoided.
  • Read the queue indicator: Guaranteed, Possible or Carryover tells you your odds before the game.
  • Protection is per queue — Draft Pick, Ranked Solo/Duo, Ranked Flex each track their own.
  • Aegis of Valor = double LP for a win since patch 26.15; it no longer softens losses.
  • Dodging an autofilled lobby backfires: the next game is a guaranteed autofill (Carryover).

How position selection works

Before you queue for ranked you choose 2 positions — a primary and a secondary — or pick Fill to take whatever the lobby needs. Matchmaking tries to give you your primary first; the secondary is the backup. Riot is clear that neither is guaranteed: if the lobby can't be built with your choices, you are autofilled into any position, which Riot describes as a last resort to get you out of the queue and into a game.

Some roles are always short. Riot's 2026 ranked blog names Support and Jungle as priority roles that are often autofilled, which is why queueing two crowded roles (say, mid and ADC) is the quickest way to get filled — and why picking a priority role as your secondary usually means you play one of your two choices.

The three queue indicators

Since 2026 the queue screen tells you how likely an autofill is before the match starts:

IndicatorWhat it means
GuaranteedOne of your positions is short of players — you get one of your top two choices.
PossibleYour positions are in high demand — you may be autofilled.
CarryoverYou dodged an autofilled lobby — you will be autofilled in your next game.

Autofill protection

If you're autofilled after queueing for other positions, Riot guarantees you your primary or secondary position for the next handful of games. Riot doesn't give a number — treat it as a few games, not a season. Protection is tracked per queue: Riot's compensation list names separate autofill protection for Draft Pick, Ranked Solo/Duo, Ranked Flex, so an autofill in Flex doesn't protect your next Solo/Duo game.

Two things eat it. A remake reduces any stored autofill protection, Aegis of Valor included — Riot even apologises for it on the support page. And when a verified leaver ruins one of your games, autofill protection is part of the compensation you receive (see LoL AFK and leaver penalties).

Aegis of Valor

Aegis of Valor is Riot's 2026 compensation for playing a role you didn't choose. At launch it gave autofilled players with a champion mastery grade of C or better either double LP on a win or no LP lost on a defeat. Patch 26.15 changed that: Aegis no longer reduces LP losses on a defeat, and a win gives double LP for a win without a minimum mastery score.

  • Who gets it: autofilled players, and — less visibly — players who regularly queue priority roles or Fill, without the pop-up.
  • How you lose it: swapping away from your autofilled role in champion select, or getting a penalty for negative behaviour such as going AFK. Patch 26.5 also voids it when reports for disruptive behaviour are validated.
  • Where it doesn't apply: a full five-player premade in Ranked Flex.
  • What it isn't: Riot calls it an occasional bonus, not a guarantee — and a remake uses it up.

Autofilled vs autofilled

Riot's other 2026 fix is fairness inside the match. Autofilled players are first matched against an autofilled player in the same position; if that isn't possible, both teams get the same number of autofilled players, and only in the worst case does the team with more autofills get slightly higher-MMR teammates to compensate. Riot tested it in EUW in patch 26.5 and enabled it in all regions in patch 26.7.

Autofill and dodging

Under the old rules a dodge reset your autofill status, so players dodged their way out of filled roles. Riot's 2026 ranked changes ended that: dodging no longer resets your autofill status. Worse, if you dodge a lobby where you were autofilled, the queue shows Carryover and you'll be autofilled in your next game. At Master and above a dodge counts as a full loss on top — the details are in LoL dodge penalties explained.

How to get autofilled less

  1. Make a priority role your secondary.

Support or Jungle as a backup turns most queues into Guaranteed.

  2. Don't stack two crowded roles.

Mid plus ADC is the classic way to play neither.

  3. Pick Fill when you're genuinely flexible.

You start faster, and Fill players can receive Aegis of Valor too.

  4. Don't dodge an autofilled lobby.

Carryover guarantees the next game fills you anyway — and you pay the dodge penalty.

  5. Learn one off-role properly.

Two champions you can play anywhere make autofill a minor problem instead of a lost game.

FAQ

Common questions

How does autofill work in League of Legends?
You choose a primary and a secondary position, or Fill. Matchmaking tries your primary first and your secondary as the backup; if neither works for the lobby you're autofilled into any position as a last resort so the game can start.
How long does autofill protection last?
Riot says that after an autofill you're guaranteed your primary or secondary position for the next handful of games, without giving a number. Protection is tracked per queue — Draft Pick, Ranked Solo/Duo and Ranked Flex each have their own.
What is Aegis of Valor in LoL?
Riot's 2026 bonus for autofilled players. Since patch 26.15 an Aegis game gives double LP for a win; it no longer reduces LP on a loss. You lose it by swapping away from your autofilled role in champion select or by getting a penalty, and full five-player Flex premades don't get it.
Does dodging reset autofill?
No. Since Riot's 2026 ranked changes a dodge no longer resets your autofill status — and if you dodge a lobby where you were autofilled, the queue shows Autofill Carryover and fills you in the next game.
