- 5 roles, 5 Role Quests
- Every role wins 50% overall
- Jungle and Support: priority roles
- Patch 26.21
"Which role should I play to climb?" is the most common question in ranked League, and the honest answer starts with a fact most guides skip: every role wins exactly half its games across all players, because every game has one top, one jungler, one mid, one ADC and one support on each team. No role is a cheat code. What changes is how each role turns your strengths into wins — and in 2026, the Role Quest each one unlocks. This guide explains what every lane controls on patch 26.21, what its quest gives, how the queue treats it, and how to pick a main that fits how you play.
- No role is "OP" for climbing: across everyone, each role wins 50% — your fit decides your win rate.
- Influence: jungle and mid touch the most of the map; top and bot win their own lane first.
- Role Quests (patch 26.1): Top gets a level-20 cap, Jungle Primal Smite, Mid free Tier 3 boots, Bot a seventh item slot, Support Bounty of Worlds.
- Queue: Support and Jungle are the roles Riot says are most often short — the usual way to see "Guaranteed".
- One main, one secondary, a small pool beats playing everything.
Why no role is the "best" one
Role win rates on stats sites always hover around 50% for a simple reason: each game has exactly one player of every role on the winning team and one on the losing team. Across all games, every role wins half the time. What you see in your own match history is therefore your win rate in that role — a measure of fit, not of the role's power. The useful question isn't "which role wins most?" but "in which role do I make the fewest mistakes and the most impact?"
That depends on what you like doing for half an hour. Ranked Solo/Duo games last about 30 minutes in Gold and 28 in Diamond on League of Graphs' patch 26.20 sample — enough time for each role's job to decide a game several times over.

Top
Quest: 1,200 pointsOne opponent for most of the game, the longest lane, Voidgrubs and the Herald on your side. You win by out-trading one player and turning a lead into a split-push that drags enemies away from objectives.
Quest reward: Level 20 cap · bonus XP · Unleashed Teleport · Fits you if: You like 1-v-1 duels, long trades and playing alone.

Jungle
Quest: 35 pet treatsNo lane — you choose which lane gets help, who takes the first drake and when the grubs fall. The highest influence in the game, and the role where a bad path costs the most.
Quest reward: Primal Smite · gold and XP per camp · jungle speed · Fits you if: You like planning, timers and deciding where the game goes.

Mid
Quest: 1,350 pointsThe shortest lane between both sides of the map. Push first and you move first: mid decides most early skirmishes and the fights over both river objectives.
Quest reward: +8% AD and AP · free Tier 3 boots · Fits you if: You like mechanics, wave control and roaming to fights.

Bot
Quest: 1,350 pointsA two-player lane where farm is everything. The 2026 quest pays gold per minion and a seventh item slot — an ADC who farms well and stays alive becomes the team's damage late.
Quest reward: +300 gold · gold per minion and takedown · 7th item slot · Fits you if: You like farming, positioning and being the late-game threat.

Support
Quest: 800 pointsNo farm needed: vision, engage or protection, and picks. You affect every fight and objective — and as a priority role it is one of the easiest picks to get in the queue.
Quest reward: Bounty of Worlds upgrade · 40-gold Control Wards · Fits you if: You like shot-calling, vision and setting teammates up.

The Role Quest each role unlocks
Since patch 26.1, every assigned role fills a quest during the game and gets a reward when it's done — and patch 26.9 reworked how the points come in. The rewards change how each role plays its game, so they're part of choosing a main:
| Role | Quest | Reward on patch 26.21 |
|---|---|---|
| 1,200 points | Level cap 20, +600 XP, 11% bonus XP and 80 bonus XP per takedown, plus Unleashed Teleport (390 s) — with Teleport already equipped you get a shield on arrival instead and 30 s off its cooldown | |
| 35 pet treats | Primal Smite, +10 gold and +10 XP per camp, and 4% movement speed in the jungle and river (8% out of combat) | |
| 1,350 points | 8% bonus AD and AP, and your Tier 2 boots become exclusive Tier 3 boots for free | |
| 1,350 points | +300 gold, then +2 gold per minion and +40 gold per champion takedown; your boots move to the Role Quest slot, freeing a seventh item slot | |
| 800 points (gold from your support item) | Runic Compass becomes Bounty of Worlds with a free Upgrade for one of five items; Control Wards cost 40 gold and two can sit in the Role Quest slot |
Top, Mid and Bot earn their points by staying in their own lane — 1.5 points a second there from 1:05, a third of a point elsewhere, plus minions, takedowns, plates and turrets — so a laner who roams too early finishes later. The full rules, the off-lane cut and the roaming allowance are in Role Quests explained.
Autofill and getting your role
You pick a primary and a secondary position. Riot's queue screen then tells you what to expect: Guaranteed when one of your positions is short of players, Possible when your picks are in high demand and you may be autofilled. Riot names Support and Jungle as the priority roles that are often filled — so a support or jungle main gets their pick more often than a player who queues for two crowded roles. Autofilled players also get protection for their next games, and since patch 26.7 autofilled players are matched against other autofilled players. The autofill guide has the details.
How to pick your main
- Play each role for a few games in normals.
Swiftplay or Draft is enough. Note which games felt like you were deciding them and which felt like you were waiting.
- Pick the job you enjoy, not the champion you like.
A champion can be played in several roles; the job — duelling, planning, farming, protecting — is what you repeat every game.
- Add a secondary that's often short.
Support or Jungle as a second pick gets you into games with a role you've practised instead of an autofill.
- Two or three champions per role.
Enough to dodge a bad matchup or a ban, few enough that you know every matchup and power spike.
- Judge it after 30–50 games.
Twenty games is noise; use the win rate calculator to see what your record really says.
Which role climbs fastest?
The role that climbs fastest is the one where you're furthest above your current rank's average player. In practice that tends to be the roles with the most say over the whole map — jungle and mid — for players who like making decisions, because one good player in those seats changes more of the game. Top and bot can be just as fast for strong laners: win your lane decisively and the lead carries the game. Support climbs steadily for players who think ahead, because vision and picks win games at every rank. Whatever you pick, the maths of the climb is the same — see what win rate you need to climb.
