LoL Swiftplay Explained: Rules, Timers and How It Works (2026)

How League's fast casual queue works in 2026: picking champions before you queue, the level 3 start, no grubs or Herald, Baron at 12 minutes, Sudden Death, surrender rules and what it counts for.

Updated 2026-10-25 Β· 8 min read Β· by the BoostPirate crew
  • Start: level 3, 1,400 gold
  • Baron at 12:00
  • Sudden Death at 25:00
  • Unranked, earns mastery

Swiftplay is League of Legends' fast casual queue β€” the one most players now use to warm up, try a new champion or play a quick game without champion select. It replaced Quickplay in 2025 and was rebuilt for 2026: games start at level 3, there are fewer objectives, Baron comes at 12 minutes and Sudden Death ends long games. This guide covers every Swiftplay rule on patch 26.21, how it differs from a normal Summoner's Rift game, whether it counts for anything, and how to use it to get better at ranked. Checked 2026-10-25.

Short answer: Swiftplay is an unranked Summoner's Rift queue where you pick two champions and two positions before you queue, so there's no champion select. Since Riot's 2026 rework you start at level 3 with 1,400 gold, Voidgrubs and the Rift Herald are gone, Baron spawns at 12:00, a Dragon Soul takes 2 drakes, and Sudden Death starts at 25:00. Games are about eight minutes shorter on average than normal Summoner's Rift. It uses your old Blind Pick MMR and earns champion mastery, but it doesn't touch your rank.
Key takeaways
  • Launched in patch 25.S1.1 (9 January 2025) and went global in 25.07, replacing Quickplay.
  • Level 3, 1,400 gold and Guardian's starter items at the start.
  • No grubs or Herald; Baron at 12:00; Elder at 15:00, then every 6 minutes.
  • Surrender from 12:00 with 70% of the votes; Sudden Death from 25:00.
  • Unranked: it counts for mastery, not for LP β€” Normal Draft is still there for practice with bans.

What Swiftplay is

Swiftplay is the latest step in League's casual queue: Blind Pick (removed in 13.22) β†’ Quickplay β†’ Swiftplay. Riot announced it on 25 November 2024, it launched with patch 25.S1.1 on 9 January 2025 in most regions and reached every region in patch 25.07, when Quickplay was removed. Riot Support describes it as "the evolved version of Blind Pick" β€” it uses the MMR you had for Blind Pick. On 1 December 2025 Riot published "A Swifter Swiftplay", the rule changes that make up today's mode.

Two more Swiftplay-only rules speed things up: Minion Frenzy β€” killing a champion gives nearby allied minions movement speed, attack speed and extra damage against minions and turrets β€” and comeback gold: the team that's behind earns more gold and XP, and the leading team gets less gold for kills. Most jungle camps also respawn 15 seconds faster. Atakhan and Feats of Strength were removed from every queue in 26.1.

League of Legends Swiftplay compared with normal Summoner's Rift on patch 26.21: Swiftplay starts at level 3 with 1,400 gold and Guardian's starter items, has no Voidgrubs or Rift Herald, a Dragon Soul after 2 drakes, Baron Nashor at 12 minutes with a buff that stays through death, the Elder Dragon at 15 minutes then every 6 minutes, Sudden Death from 25 minutes, no Role Quests and surrender from 12 minutes with 70 percent of the votes; games are about eight minutes shorter on average

Picking champions without champion select

  1. Pick two positions.

Before you queue you choose two different positions, and at least one of them has to be a "priority position".

  2. Pick a champion for each.

Two different champions, one per position. There are no bans, and the same champion can be on both teams.

  3. Queue with friends if you like.

Parties of 2–4 need unique primary picks; a five-stack needs one unique champion per player.

  4. Load straight in.

There's no draft to sit through β€” accept the match and you're on the Rift.

How objectives and endings work

With grubs and the Herald removed, the early game is about drakes and lanes. Only 2 elemental drakes are needed for a soul, Baron arrives at 12:00 and its buff stays through death, and the Elder Dragon spawns at 15:00, then every 6 minutes. If the game is still going at 25:00, Sudden Death begins (it was 30:00 in 2025) and the Nexus becomes immune β€” fights decide the winner.

Does Swiftplay count for anything?

  • NoLP or rank β€” it's an unranked queue
  • Yeschampion mastery (Riot lists Swiftplay among the normal queues)
  • Blind PickMMR β€” Swiftplay matches you on it
  • OffRole Quests (since patch 26.1)

Because it uses its own MMR, a good Swiftplay record doesn't move your ranked MMR β€” the MMR guide explains what does. Riot moved Co-op vs AI onto Swiftplay rules in patch 26.2 and reverted it in 26.3 because queue times rose sharply.

Swiftplay, Normal Draft or Ranked?

Swiftplay

  • Warming up and short sessions
  • Trying a champion you just unlocked
  • Practising fights and mechanics

Normal Draft

  • Practising bans, picks and matchups
  • Full objectives and real game length
  • Normal Draft is still in the game β€” on some servers it only runs at set hours

Ranked Solo/Duo

Using Swiftplay to get better at ranked

  1. Warm up on your ranked champion.

One quick game before ranked loosens your hands without risking LP.

  2. Learn new champions here first.

Ten Swiftplay games teach the combos before you lock the champion in draft.

  3. Don't copy Swiftplay macro into ranked.

No grubs, an early Baron and Sudden Death change the timings β€” ranked plays to the normal objective clock.
