Marvel Rivals Hero Bans Explained (2026): Rules and Ban Rates

How hero bans work in Marvel Rivals Competitive: Gold III and up, three per team, 15-second rounds, the turn-based vote since Season 10, every change since launch and the most-banned heroes.

  • Bans from Gold III
  • 3 bans per team
  • 15-second ban rounds
  • Turn-based vote since S10

Hit Gold III rank iconGold III in Marvel Rivals and Competitive gains a step before hero select: the ban phase. From then on your main can disappear before the match starts, and since Season 10 the way teams ban has changed again. This guide covers the rules as they stand on 2 November 2026: which ranks ban, how many heroes and how fast, the turn-based team vote, every change since launch, the heroes banned most often in community data, and how to build a hero pool that survives.

Short answer: Hero bans start at Gold III in Marvel Rivals Competitive. Each team bans three heroes, so up to six are out of a match, and each ban round lasts 15 seconds. Since Season 10 the teams ban in turns, and each team's ban is decided by a vote among its players. Below Gold III there are no bans.
Key takeaways
  • No bans below Gold III. NetEase lowered the line from Diamond in Season 2 (April 2025).
  • Three bans per team since Season 7 (March 2026), 15 seconds per round.
  • Teams ban in turns, by vote, since Season 10, as announced in the Season 10 Dev Vision video.
  • Devil Dinosaur and Phoenix topped the Season 10.5 ban rates in community data; NetEase publishes none.
  • Keep at least two heroes for every role you play, and more if your main is a ban magnet.

Which ranks have hero bans

Bans are a Competitive feature with a rank line. Until Season 2 only Diamond and above banned; NetEase's Season 2 notes (8 April 2025) moved it down: "Pick/ban will now come into play starting from Gold III rather than Diamond tier." That line still holds:

RankBan phase
Bronze rank iconBronze Silver rank iconSilverNone: every hero is available
Gold III rank iconGold III and up, to One Above All rank iconOne Above AllThree bans per team, 15-second rounds, teams in turns by vote

NetEase doesn't spell out how a lobby that straddles Gold III is treated, so if you sit right on the line, expect bans in some games and not in others.

How many bans, and how fast

Season 7 (patch notes of 18 March 2026) set the numbers you play with today: "Both teams can now ban 3 heroes each (up from 2)", and "each ban round has been shortened to 15 seconds (was 20s)". Three per team means up to six heroes out of every match from Gold III up, out of a roster of 54.

The 15-second window is short. Agree on your team's priorities while the lobby loads, not when the timer starts, and have a backup ready in case your hero goes.

Turn-based voting since Season 10

Season 10 (11 September 2026) changed how the bans are chosen. NetEase announced it in the Season 10 Dev Vision video; as Beebom's recap reports, bans are no longer simultaneous, and "each team will get their turn to ban a character based on a voting system", still from Gold III. The Season 10 patch notes and balance post don't describe it in writing, so the video is the source.

  • Turns, not at once. Teams alternate, so each ban can respond to what the other side just took out.
  • A team vote. Your team's ban comes from what its players vote for, so one player can't decide alone.
  • Unknowns. NetEase hasn't published how a tied vote is settled or the exact turn order. Ignore anyone who states it as fact.

The most-banned heroes (community data)

NetEase doesn't publish ban rates. The figures below are Season 10.5 Competitive ban rates as Beebom published them (updated 1 November 2026), citing third-party trackers such as RivalsTracker. The article doesn't say which ranks or platform they cover, so treat them as a rough picture, not a census.

Three things to read from it. Devil Dinosaur portraitDevil Dinosaur, the Season 8 newcomer, is still banned in more than two games in five, far ahead of everyone else, even after the Season 10.5 balance post (6 October 2026) trimmed his health from 850 to 825. Phoenix portraitPhoenix leads the Duelists at about a third of games, with the next Duelists, Elsa Bloodstone and Spider-Man, under a fifth. And the most-banned Strategists are banned less often than the top Vanguards and Duelists; the same post nerfed Gambit, who still leads them. Season 11's balance post will move all of it again.

Building a hero pool that survives bans

The roster is the starting point. Marvel Rivals has 54 heroes: 14 Vanguards, 27 Duelists and 12 Strategists, plus Deadpool, who can be played in all three roles (the Season 10 balance post lists him three times).

  • Two heroes per role you queue, at least. Six bans can take a large bite out of a role: six of the 12 Strategists, in the extreme case where every ban lands there.
  • Plan for the odds. On the Season 10.5 figures, a Devil Dinosaur main loses him in more than two games in five, a Phoenix main in about one in three and a Peni Parker main in more than one in four. If your main is on the list above, your second hero isn't optional.
  • Pick backups that rarely get banned. A second hero who isn't on the most-banned list above is available far more often than one who is.
  • Think about team-ups. Since the Season 9 rebuild, published guides report that a team-up works even without its partner, which only unlocks the enhanced effect, so a ban on your partner weakens a combo without killing it. More in our team-ups guide.
  • Practise the backup in Quick Match, where no rank is on the line.
