Apex Legends Ranked Party Rules (2026): Who Can You Queue With?

Who you can queue Apex Legends ranked with in 2026: EA's two-rank premade rule as a full table, why the squad is matched at its highest RP, EA's premade win-rate data, the tests that did not stick and what Season 31 changes.

Updated 2026-11-02 · 8 min read · by the BoostPirate crew
  • Premades within two ranks
  • Matched at the highest RP
  • Premade trio wins 17% more
  • One-tier test not kept

Apex Legends lets you queue ranked with friends, but not with every friend. A premade duo or trio has to sit inside one rule about ranks, and the whole squad is then matched on its strongest player. This guide explains the rule as EA writes it, gives the full who-can-queue table, shows what EA's own data says about premades, covers the 2026 tests that didn't stick and lists what Season 31 changes for parties.

Short answer: everyone in an Apex ranked premade, duo or trio, has to be within two ranks of each other, or matchmaking won't start. A Bronze player can queue with Rookie, Silver and Gold friends but not Platinum. The squad is matched on its highest RP, so a lower-ranked friend plays in your lobbies. EA tested a stricter one-tier rule and a solo-only queue for Diamond and above in 2026 and kept neither.
Key takeaways
  • Two ranks is the limit: Gold can queue with Bronze, Silver, Platinum and Diamond, but not Rookie or Master.
  • The rule counts tiers, as EA's own example does, not divisions.
  • Your squad is matched at its highest member's RP.
  • EA's numbers: a premade trio wins 17% more often than three solo players, a duo plus a solo 19% more.
  • From Season 31 a Diamond or higher player in the match brings legend bans, and ranked needs account level 20.

The two-rank rule in one line

EA Help puts it plainly: "All players in a premade Ranked squad have to be within two ranks of each other. If they aren't, matchmaking will fail." Its example: a Bronze rank iconBronze player can queue with Rookie rank iconRookie, Bronze, Silver rank iconSilver and Gold rank iconGold players, but not with Platinum rank iconPlatinum or higher.

Three details follow from EA's wording:

  • Tiers, not divisions. EA's example talks about whole ranks, so a Bronze IV player and a Gold I friend are two ranks apart, the same as Bronze I and Gold IV.
  • Duos and trios alike. The rule covers every premade squad. Solo players filled into your squad by matchmaking aren't part of the premade.
  • It can change. EA notes that the rules can differ during temporary tests, which happened twice in 2026 (below).

Who can queue with whom

The full table, built from EA's rule and its tier order (Rookie, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Master, Apex Predator):

Bronze rank iconBronzeRookie, Bronze, Silver, GoldPlatinum, Diamond, Master, Apex Predator

Master rank iconMasterPlatinum, Diamond, Master, Apex PredatorRookie, Bronze, Silver, Gold
Apex Predator rank iconApex Predator*Diamond, Master, Apex PredatorRookie, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum

* EA lists Apex Predator as a rank, so the table treats it as the step above Master. EA doesn't say in so many words how Predator counts for the premade rule. Predators are Master players (the top 750 on each platform), so if the game treats them as Master for this rule, they can also queue with Platinum friends.

Who can queue Apex Legends ranked together: an eight by eight grid of the tiers Rookie, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Master and Apex Predator with their rank icons on both axes, where every pair within two ranks is shaded as allowed and every pair further apart is blocked; beside it EA's premade data: a premade duo plus a solo wins 19% more often than three solos, a full premade trio 17% more, and 85% of Masters squads are premade trios; and a note that the squad is matched at its highest RP

Your squad plays at its highest RP

The second half of EA's rule matters as much as the first: "You'll be matched against other squads using the highest RP value in your premade squad." Take a Gold IV rank iconGold IV player, at about 5,500 RP on EA's split-reset table, who queues with a Diamond IV rank iconDiamond IV friend at about 12,000 RP. They're two ranks apart, so the queue starts, and the squad is matched as a 12,000 RP squad. The Gold player meets Diamond-level opponents.

From Season 31 (3 November 2026) the strongest player sets two more things.

  • Legend bans. EA enables them "so that any match with Diamond+ players will use the feature". One Diamond in your trio, or in the lobby, is enough.
  • Challenger and Goliath entry costs. Squads two or more tiers below the lobby's median tier pay less to enter (Challenger), and squads two or more tiers above it pay more (Goliath). EA hadn't said how a mixed squad's tier is set when we checked.

Why EA limits premades: its own numbers

EA's matchmaking report of 30 September 2026 gives the clearest reason for the rule. In its words, "a squad with a premade duo plus a solo fill wins 19% more often than a squad of three solos", and "a full premade trio wins 17% more often." At the top the effect is everywhere: "85% of Masters squads are premade three-stacks".

The same report describes how lobbies are built: "The matchmaker pulls 60 available players of similar RP into a lobby, sorts everyone by RP, and splits that list into thirds", and each squad gets one player from each third. A premade sidesteps that balancing, and the two-rank rule limits how far.

The 2026 tests that didn't stick

TestWhat EA measuredResult
One-tier premadesDiamond players met about 8% fewer Diamonds and about 8% more Platinum players."at this time, we are not making the one-tier restriction permanent"
Solo-only queue for Diamond and above (Season 29)Compared with the Season 26–28 average, Diamond+ duo players returned 16.6% less and premade players 20.9% less."We are not rolling out the solo queue experiment as a permanent requirement"

So the two-rank rule stands for now, but EA has shown it is willing to test tighter limits. Check each season's patch notes before you plan a climb with a friend.

Solo players: the 2026 matchmaking tweak

EA also adjusted matchmaking for players without a party. Since Season 29 (May 2026), "solo players will matchmake against opponents of a slightly lower skill tier" in both Ranked and Unranked, to "reduce the advantage of full premade squads". If your friends are outside your range, solo queue is no longer a pure disadvantage; our solo climbing guide builds on that.

Cross-play, platforms and parties

  • Cross-play. It can't be turned off on PC. PlayStation, Xbox and Switch 2 players can turn it off, and then only match same-platform players who also turned it off, so a mixed PC and console party needs cross-play on.
  • Ranks per platform. EA tracks ranked progress separately on each platform, so each player brings the rank of the platform they play on. Console generations count as one platform: PS4 and PS5 share a rank. Our cross-progression guide covers what else carries over.

Season 31 and Season 32: what changes for parties

EA's Ranked Roadmap (20 October 2026) changes three things in Season 31, which starts on 3 November 2026:

  • Account level 20. Road to Ranked challenges are removed and ranked access "will move back to only requiring Account Level 20", so a friend below level 20 can't join your ranked squad.
  • Legend bans in any match with Diamond or higher players, with one ban request per player and a weighted random draw.
  • Challenger and Goliath entry costs, set by your squad's tier against the lobby's median tier.

Season 32, which EA dates only as "early 2027", rebuilds the ladder with Iron, Emerald, Masters IV–I and Grandmaster, and splits ranked into an Open League (Iron to Emerald) and a Pro-Am League (Diamond to Grandmaster). EA hasn't said how the premade rule will work on the new ladder; our Season 32 guide follows it.

Duo boosts and the two-rank rule

The rule decides how a duo boost works. Our booster joins your squad from an account within two ranks of yours, you play every game, and the squad is matched at the highest RP in it. Your password stays with you, which is the main difference from a piloted boost. Gold IV to Platinum IV is $21.24 piloted today and $29.74 as a duo, from the same engine as checkout. Paid boosting of any kind still conflicts with EA's rules, so read the Risk Disclosure and is Apex Legends boosting safe? first. Coaching is the option fully inside the rules.

Apex Legends boosting opens soon. Get the launch alert on the Apex Legends page. The service pages already show live prices for a rank boost (orders from $4.00) and coaching.

FAQ

Common questions

Why can't I queue ranked with my friend in Apex?
Your ranks are more than two apart. EA requires every player in a premade ranked squad to be within two ranks of each other, and matchmaking fails if they are not. A Bronze player, for example, can queue with Rookie, Silver and Gold friends but not with Platinum.
Can Diamond queue with Platinum in Apex ranked?
Yes. Diamond can queue with Gold, Platinum, Diamond and Master players, and with Apex Predators if Predator counts as the next rank, as EA's tier list suggests. Rookie, Bronze and Silver are too far away.
What RP is a premade squad matched at?
The highest RP in the squad. EA matches you against other squads using the highest RP value in your premade, so a lower-ranked friend plays in your lobbies.
Can I play ranked with a friend on console if I am on PC?
Yes, with cross-play on, which is always on for PC. Each of you keeps the rank of your own platform, because EA tracks ranked progress separately on each platform.
