How to Climb from Gold to Emerald in LoL: A Mid-Elo Plan That Works (2026)

Gold, Platinum and Emerald hold more than half of ranked League. What separates the tiers, the LP maths of the 800-LP climb, a champion-pool and wave plan for mid elo, the duo rules on the way, and when coaching or a boost makes sense.

Updated 2026-10-16 · 8 min read · by the BoostPirate crew
  • Gold: 23% of players
  • Emerald IV: top ~18%
  • Gold IV → Emerald IV: 800 LP
  • Gold duos Silver–Plat

Gold, Platinum and Emerald are where League of Legends is actually played: together they hold 54% of ranked players, and the median solo-queue player sits in Gold III. Climbing from Gold to Emerald means passing most of the ladder — 800 LP in two tiers — and the mistakes that cost games change along the way. This guide covers how big each tier is, the LP maths of the climb at your win rate, what separates the tiers, a mid-elo plan, the duo rules, and when coaching or a boost makes sense. Figures from League of Graphs rank distribution (patch 26.20) and Riot Support, checked 2026-10-15.

Short answer: Gold IV to Emerald IV is 800 LP. Gold IV puts you in the top 60% of ranked players, Platinum IV the top 36% and Emerald IV the top 18%. With even gains of about 20 LP, a 55% win rate nets about 2 LP a game and 60% about 4 — so what shortens the climb is a higher win rate and LP gains bigger than your losses. Play two or three champions in one role, manage waves, and stop after two losses.
Key takeaways
  • 54% of the ladder lives in Gold (23.0%), Platinum (18.0%) and Emerald (13.0%).
  • 800 LP from Gold IV to Emerald IV — four divisions per tier, about 100 LP each.
  • Win rate is the lever. 52% barely moves you; 58–60% climbs a tier in weeks, not months.
  • Mid elo is won on waves and recalls, not on outplays — and on playing the same few champions.
  • Duo windows: Gold with Silver–Platinum, Platinum with Gold–Emerald, Emerald with Platinum–Diamond III.

Where Gold, Platinum and Emerald sit

The League of Legends mid-elo climb: Gold holds 23% of ranked players, Platinum 18% and Emerald 13%; Gold IV is the top 60%, Platinum IV the top 36% and Emerald IV the top 18%; Gold IV to Emerald IV is 800 LP, about 400 games at a 55% win rate with even 20 LP gains or 200 at 60%

Emerald rank emblem Emerald13.0% 18.09%29:12

Gold IV is the single biggest division on the ladder (8.21% of players), which is why it feels crowded: every new season start and every losing streak pools players there. Emerald, added in 2023, is the last tier before Diamond's much smaller 4.0%. The full picture is in the 2026 rank distribution.

The LP maths of 800 LP

Win rateEven LP (±20)MMR above rank (+28 / −18)
52%~1000 games (+0.8 LP a game)~136 games (+5.9 LP a game)
55%~400 games (+2.0 LP a game)~110 games (+7.3 LP a game)
58%~251 games (+3.2 LP a game)~93 games (+8.7 LP a game)
60%~200 games (+4.0 LP a game)~84 games (+9.6 LP a game)

Two things jump out. First, win rate matters more than anything: going from 52% to 60% cuts the even-gains climb from about 1000 games to 200. Second, when your MMR runs ahead of your rank the climb collapses to a fraction of that — the splits are illustrative (Riot publishes no LP numbers; the ±20 baseline is the official wiki's), so plug in your own with the LP gain checker and read LoL MMR explained for why splits change.

What separates the tiers

  • Gold: fundamentals decide games — last-hitting, not dying before minute ten, and showing up when an objective spawns. Most Gold games are thrown, not won.
  • Platinum: waves and recalls. Players start punishing bad backs and lost waves; the ones who climb crash a wave before recalling and arrive at fights first.
  • Emerald: consistency. Mechanics are close; what separates players is a small champion pool, playing the map after laning, and not tilting off a bad start.

A mid-elo plan that works

  1. Two or three champions, one role.

Comfort beats counter-picking at this level. Add one backup role for autofill — and remember an autofilled win now pays double LP with Aegis of Valor (autofill explained).

  2. Crash, then recall.

Push the wave into the enemy tower before you back so you lose no farm or plates. Of all the mid-elo habits, it's the one our coaches correct most.

  3. Track the enemy jungler.

Note where they start and when they show; the minute after they appear on the far side is your window to push or invade.

  4. Arrive first.

Be on the river about 30 seconds before an objective spawns, with a control ward. Fights are won by whoever gets there first.

  5. Mute early, stop after two losses.

Chat restrictions also threaten your end-of-season rewards (Honor explained), and tilted games are the expensive ones.

  6. Review one loss a week.

Replays stop working when the next patch lands, so save the game you don't understand and watch it before patch day.

Duo on the way up

Your tierCan duo with (Solo/Duo)
GoldSilver – Platinum
PlatinumGold – Emerald
EmeraldPlatinum – Diamond III

Riot says premade games can bring slightly more difficult opponents or reduced LP gains, so a duo partner is only worth it if you win clearly more together. Flex has no rank restrictions at Diamond and below, which makes it the easier queue for a group — and Flex wins count toward the Victorious skin too. Full rules: LoL duo queue rules.

Coaching, duo or a boost?

If you're stuck at a win rate around 50% and want to climb on your own, coaching is the fix — an hour with a Master+ player finds the two or three habits costing you LP (is LoL coaching worth it). If you want the rank now, a Solo/Duo boost delivers it division by division; choose the Duo option to play every game yourself with a booster in your party. A piloted boost means sharing your account, which Riot's rules forbid — read is LoL boosting safe first. Gold IV → Emerald IV is one of the climbs timed in how long a LoL boost takes.

Yes. Emerald IV puts you in roughly the top 18% of ranked players on the October 2026 League of Graphs data, and Diamond and above is under 5%.
Who can I duo with in Gold and Platinum?
Gold can duo with Silver to Platinum, Platinum with Gold to Emerald, and Emerald with Platinum to Diamond III (Riot Support).
Should I buy a boost from Gold to Emerald?
If you want the rank now, a boost delivers it; if you want to hold it, pick the Duo option so you play the games yourself, or book coaching. Piloted boosting means sharing your account, which Riot's rules forbid — read our safety guide first.
