What Win Rate Do You Need to Climb in LoL? The LP Maths (2026)

The win rate you need to climb depends on your LP split. The maths at the ±20 baseline — 50% stands still, 55% is a division every 50 games — what changes when your MMR is above or below your rank, and how many games each climb really takes.

Updated 2026-10-24 · 7 min read · by the BoostPirate crew
  • 50% = standing still
  • 55%: +2 LP a game
  • 60%: +4 LP a game
  • A division = 100 LP

Every climbing question in League comes back to one piece of arithmetic: how much LP you win, how much you lose, and how often each happens. A division is 100 LP; your win rate and your LP split decide how many games it takes. This guide walks through that maths at the official wiki's ±20 baseline, shows how many games each win rate needs per division and per tier, explains break-even when gains and losses differ, and why your win rate drifts back towards 50% as you climb.

Short answer: you climb at any win rate above your break-even. With even LP (about ±20) break-even is 50%: 52% nets +0.8 LP a game (a division in about 125 games), 55% nets +2 (about 50 games) and 60% nets +4 (about 25). When your MMR is above your rank and you gain more than you lose, break-even drops below 50% — and the climb speeds up.
Key takeaways
  • Net LP per game = win rate × LP per win − loss rate × LP per loss.
  • Break-even = LP per loss ÷ (LP per win + LP per loss): 66.7% at +14/−28, 39.1% at +28/−18.
  • Small edges add up slowly: at 52% a tier takes about 500 games; at 55% about 200.
  • Your LP split matters as much as your win rate — fix a negative split before grinding games.
  • The climb ends at your 50% rank, where matchmaking gives you even games.

The LP maths in one line

Out of 100 games at a 55% win rate with ±20 LP, you win 55 × 20 = 1100 LP and lose 45 × 20 = 900 LP — a net 200 LP, or +2 a game. A division is 100 LP, so that's about 50 games per division. The ±20 baseline is the official wiki's figure for players whose MMR matches their rank in 2026; Riot Support publishes no fixed number, and your own gains move with your MMR.

League of Legends win rate and LP: at plus or minus 20 LP, 50 percent stands still, 52 percent nets 0.8 LP a game, 55 percent 2 LP and a division in about 50 games, 60 percent 4 LP and a division in about 25 games; break-even moves with your LP split

Break-even when gains and losses differ

Your gains and losses are rarely identical. The win rate at which you stand still is your LP per loss divided by the sum of both:

MMR above your rank

At +28 / −18, break-even is 18 ÷ 46 = 39.1%. You climb even while losing slightly more than you win — typical at the start of a season.

MMR below your rank

At +14 / −28, break-even is 28 ÷ 42 = 66.7%. A 60% win rate barely moves you — common after a losing streak or a long break.

Riot Support says MMR below your rank means you lose more LP each defeat until your win rate levels out. Type your own numbers into the LP gain checker to see your break-even and how many games your next division takes.

Why your win rate drifts back to 50%

Matchmaking aims for even games. While your skill is above your rank you'll win more than half, your MMR rises, and your opponents get stronger — until you win about half again. That's the rank you "belong" in today. A win rate far above 50% is a sign you're still climbing towards that point, not a number you can keep forever. The only way to push the 50% point higher is to play better: tighter champion pool, fewer deaths, better waves.

How to raise your win rate

  1. Play fewer champions.

Two or three in one role: you know every matchup and power spike instead of learning them mid-game.

  2. Stop after two losses.

Tilted games pull the win rate down — the loss-streak guide has the stop rule.

  3. Farm better.

Gold wins fights, and missed waves are the biggest leak — see what a good CS per minute is.

  4. Play the objectives on time.

Drakes, grubs, Herald and Baron decide games more than kills — the objective timer keeps the clock.

  5. Judge over 50+ games.

Twenty games is noise. The win rate calculator shows how long a target rate really takes.

Help with the climb

Skip the 52% grind. Net wins (from $1.60 a win) are counted as wins over losses — a verified booster's losses don't count against the order.

FAQ

Common questions

What win rate do you need to climb in LoL?
Anything above your break-even. With even LP (about ±20, the official wiki's 2026 baseline) that's 50%: 52% nets under 1 LP a game, 55% about 2 LP (a division in about 50 games), 60% about 4 LP (25 games). If you gain more than you lose, the break-even drops below 50%.
Is a 55% win rate good in LoL?
Yes — over a big sample it's a steady climb: about +2 LP a game at even gains, so a full tier (400 LP) takes roughly 200 games. Players far above their rank often sit at 60% or more for a while, which is why they climb so fast.
How do I find my break-even win rate?
Divide your LP per loss by the sum of your LP per win and per loss. At +25 / −15 that's 15 ÷ 40 = 37.5%; at +15 / −25 it's 62.5%. The LP gain checker does it for you.
Why does my win rate stay around 50%?
Because matchmaking aims for even games: as you climb, opponents get stronger until you win about half. A win rate well above 50% lasts only while your rank is still catching up with your skill — the climb ends where you're a 50% player.
