R6 Placement Matches (2026): 5 Games, the Rank Reset, Where You Land

How Rainbow Six Siege placement matches work under Ranked 3.0: five games every season, what the rank reset clears and keeps, what decides where you land, no squad limits, and when the next reset comes.

Updated 2026-11-02 · 9 min read · by the BoostPirate crew
  • 5 placements a season
  • All ranks reset
  • No squad limits
  • No placing into Champion

Every Rainbow Six Siege season begins the same way: your rank disappears and five placement matches decide where you start. Under Ranked 3.0, live since 2 June 2026, those five games "grant increased Rank Point gains", and they're the only ranked games of the season with no squad rank limits. This guide covers placements as they work on 2 November 2026: how many you play and when, what the reset clears and keeps, what decides where you land, how they feed your rewards, when the next reset is due, and how to prepare so the five games go your way.

Short answer: Every Rainbow Six Siege season starts with five placement matches. Ubisoft resets all ranks at the start of the season, and your placement result takes your past seasons into account as well as those five games. Placement games give bigger Rank Point gains than normal matches and have no squad rank restrictions, but nobody places straight into Champion.
Key takeaways
  • Five placement matches at the start of every season, about every three months.
  • All ranks reset, but your previous seasons still influence where you land.
  • Placements give bigger RP gains than normal ranked games. KDA doesn't count.
  • No squad rank limits during placements, so it's the one time friends of any rank can queue together.
  • You can't place into Champion. It has to be won in normal ranked games afterwards.

Five placement matches, every season

Ubisoft's rule since Ranked 3.0: "At the start of each season, players will complete 5 Placement Matches before receiving their starting Rank." Siege runs four seasons a year of about three months each, so placements come round roughly every three months: Y11S2 began on 2 June 2026 and Y11S3 on 1 September 2026. When you play them depends on your situation:

SituationPlacement matchesWhat happens
A new season starts5"All ranks will be reset"; your rank shows again after the fifth game.
Your first season of Ranked5Once Ranked is unlocked (premium offer, level 50, 2-step verification), the same five games give you your first rank.
Mid-season0No reset. Your rank moves after every match, squad limits apply, and the Demotion Shield guards your division.
The Legend DivisionnoneA separate solo-queue playlist with regional leaderboards for eligible Champions, opened mid-season (15 October 2026).

If Ranked isn't open on your account yet, start with our unlock guide: Free Access doesn't include it.

What the reset clears and what it keeps

Cleared

  • Your rank. Ubisoft: "At the start of each season, all ranks will be reset and players must complete 5 placement matches to receive a new one."
  • Last season's progress inside the ladder. Your division and RP don't carry over as they were; the five games set your starting rank.

Kept

  • Your operators, cosmetics, clearance level and Renown.
  • The rank rewards you earned. Last season's reward, set by your highest rank, arrives at the start of the new season.
  • Your history. "Your performance in previous seasons also has an influence" on where you place.

So "reset" is accurate for the badge on your card, but not for the game's picture of you. A player who finished last season in Diamond doesn't start from the same place as a brand-new account, even though both show no rank on day one.

What decides where you land

Ubisoft hasn't published a formula, but it has said what goes in and what doesn't:

  • Your five results. "These matches help us calibrate your skill," and they "grant increased Rank Point gains", so each win and loss counts for more than it will later in the season.
  • Your past seasons. "Your performance in previous seasons also has an influence." The first Ranked 3.0 placements, in Y11S2, were "designed to reveal a player's existing skill level from the previous system, Ranked 2.0".
  • Not your KDA. "KDA is not a factor in rank progression." A quiet game with good drones, utility and trades that wins the match beats a top-fragging loss.
  • Not Champion. Players "cannot place directly into Champion"; Ubisoft wants it to "represent sustained, high-level performance and not a short snapshot at the start of a season".

Placements are still being tuned. In June 2026 Ubisoft said they "didn't feel impactful enough for many players", that players were "clustering in higher ranks", and that "placement matches will carry more weight in determining starting rank in future seasons". Read each new season's patch notes for the latest change. There is no published "Platinum last season means Gold this season" table either: anyone quoting one is guessing.

Placements with friends: no squad limits

"Placement Matches do not include Squad Restrictions, allowing players to queue freely with friends regardless of Rank." For the rest of the season the usual rule applies: Copper to Emerald within three full ranks of each other, Diamond and Champion within two. That makes placements the one window in which a Silver player and a Diamond friend can play ranked together.

One thing Ubisoft hasn't spelled out is a squad that mixes players still in placements with players who have finished theirs. If your friend is already placed and you aren't, check whether the game lets you queue before you plan your evening around it. The full rule set is in our squad rank restrictions guide.

Placements and your season rewards

Your rank reward follows "the highest Rank achieved during the season, even if a player later deranks". If the rank you place at turns out to be your best of the season, that's the reward you get; climb higher later and the reward moves up with you. Ubisoft also says "every Ranked match now contributes toward a Competitive Rewards progression track" (2 points a win, 1 a loss), which by that wording includes placements, although Ubisoft doesn't name them. Seasonal headgear needs no rank at all: "you can still earn the exclusive seasonal headgear just by playing". The ranked rewards guide lists every step of the track.

One Rainbow Six Siege season from start to finish, using Y11S3 Operation Split Fire: 1 September 2026 season start with all ranks reset and past seasons still counting; your first five games as placement matches with bigger RP gains, no squad limits and no placing into Champion; normal ranked after placements with squad limits and the Demotion Shield; 15 October 2026 mid-season when the Legend Division opened; and about 1 December 2026 when the Battle Pass ends and the reward for your highest rank arrives next season. Notes: Y11S4 not announced on 2 November 2026, next placements estimated around 1 December, KDA does not count

When is the next rank reset?

At the start of Y11S4, and Ubisoft hadn't announced it on 2 November 2026. What is known:

  • Y11S3 Operation Split Fire began on 1 September 2026. Ubisoft's season page gives a start date but no end date.
  • The Split Fire Battle Pass runs "from September 1st to December 1st", on Ubisoft's Siege home page and Battle Pass page.
  • Last year's Season 4 was revealed in mid-November: Ubisoft's news posts on Operation Tenfold Pursuit went up on 16 November 2025.
  • One Y11S4 change is confirmed: Ubisoft says "a new, mandatory Code of Conduct" begins in Year 11 Season 4.

Put together, expect a reveal in November and the new season, with its reset and five placements, around early December 2026. That's our estimate, not Ubisoft's date. Our Y11S4 guide and the season calendar will carry the confirmed date as soon as Ubisoft publishes it.

How to prepare for your five games

  1. Check Ranked is open before season day.

Premium offer, level 50 and 2-step verification on your Ubisoft account. Sorting out 2FA on launch night costs you the evening.

  2. Read the new season's notes.

Map pools change between seasons: Y11S2 removed Villa, Skyscraper, Theme Park and Kanal from the ranked pool. Know the five maps you'll ban from.

  3. Settle two operators per side.

One you can always play and one backup for when it's picked or banned, on attack and on defence. Placements are not the time to learn a new kit.

  4. Warm up first.

A Quick Match or two, or a few Unranked rounds, before game one, so your first placement isn't your warm-up.

  5. Use the open squad window well.

No rank limits means you can bring your best friends whatever their rank; bring the ones who call information and play the objective.

  6. Play rested, and never leave.

Since Y11S2 abandon penalties are calculated "based on time spent away from a match, rather than a fixed penalty". Two or three games a sitting beats five on tilt. See penalties and reputation.

Placements with help

Our Placement Matches service is sold per game, one to five, so you order only the games you have left. The price follows the rank you held last season, and a new account is priced as Copper. Five games after a Silver season are $13.27 today, and five after a Diamond season $33.75, from the same engine as checkout. Rainbow Six Siege orders aren't open yet: get the launch alert on the R6 page.

Be clear about the rules: Ubisoft's Player Protection Core Rules (31 July 2026) list "Paying or using external services to inflate rank" as boosting, with sanctions up to a permanent ban. Read the Risk Disclosure and is R6 boosting bannable? first. If you'd rather play every game yourself, a coaching session before placements stays inside the rules.

  • Placement games: one to five games, piloted or duo; placements have no squad limits.
  • After you place: Rank Boost from your new rank to any division up to Champion V.
  • Prepare yourself: 1-on-1 coaching with a Champion coach on your own account.
Rainbow Six Siege boosting opens soon. Get the launch alert on the R6 page. The service pages already show live prices for placement games (from $4.00 a game) and a rank boost (from $4.00 a division).

FAQ

Common questions

How many placement matches are in R6 Siege?
Five, at the start of every season. Siege runs four seasons a year, so you play placements about every three months, and they grant bigger Rank Point gains than a normal ranked game.
Can you place Champion in R6?
No. Ubisoft confirmed in June 2026 that players cannot place directly into Champion. It has to be earned through consistent performance in normal ranked games after placements.
Does my old rank matter for placements?
Yes. Ubisoft resets all ranks each season, but says your performance in previous seasons also influences your placement, alongside the five games themselves.
When is the next R6 rank reset?
At the start of Y11S4, which Ubisoft had not announced on 2 November 2026. The Operation Split Fire Battle Pass runs until 1 December 2026, so expect the new season and its placements around then.
