WoW Classic Honor Ranks Explained (2026): R1–R14, Rank Points and Rewards

How the Classic PvP ranks work in 2026: the original rank points and decay, the fixed-threshold system Classic Era and Season of Discovery use today, every rank's reward, and what Blizzard has said about ranks in World of Warcraft: Forever.

Updated 2026-10-31 Β· 9 min read Β· by the BoostPirate crew
  • 14 ranks: Private to Grand Marshal
  • No decay on Era and SoD
  • Up to 4 ranks of progress a week
  • 15 honorable kills a week to rank

The fourteen PvP ranks β€” Private to Grand Marshal, Scout to High Warlord β€” are Classic's oldest grind and still its most famous title. But the system behind them has changed twice since 2019. This guide explains the original rank points and decay, the fixed-threshold system Classic Era and Season of Discovery use on 31 October 2026, what every rank unlocks, and what Blizzard has said about ranks in World of Warcraft: Forever.

Short answer: each week your honor turns into contribution points on a fixed scale, and at the weekly reset you move up toward the rank those points earn β€” up to 4 ranks of progress a week, smaller steps near the top. You need 15 honorable kills a week to count. 500,000 honor is the weekly maximum. There's no decay on Classic Era or SoD since December 2023, and Blizzard put Rank 14 at about eight weeks of maximum honor.
Key takeaways
  • No more racing your realm: since August 2023 ranks come from fixed thresholds, not from standing against other players.
  • The weekly cap is real: 500,000 honor = 65,000 points, and no more than four ranks of progress a week.
  • The top is slow: past Rank 10 a maxed week moves you a fraction of a rank.
  • Nothing decays on Era or SoD; only dishonorable kills can cost you a rank.
  • Forever keeps R1–R14 with Rank Points, a weekly cap, PvP seasons and new rewards.

The 14 ranks and what they unlock

Every rank has an Alliance and a Horde title, a points threshold and a reward you can buy from the faction's PvP vendors. The thresholds below are the same numbers in both systems: rank points in the original game, contribution points on Classic Era today. Rank 1 only needs the 15 kills.

How the original system worked

In 2005, and again when Classic brought ranks back in 2019, they were a competition. Each week your honor was compared with every other player of your faction on the realm; your standing decided how many rank points you earned, and your total then decayed by 20% every week. Rank 14 needed 60,000 points and was limited to roughly the top 0.1% of the realm, so the top ranks meant months of near round-the-clock play against everyone else chasing them. Low-level characters were capped too: under level 30 you couldn't pass Rank 3. That version is what most people picture when they talk about "the grind".

How ranking works on Classic Era today

With patch 1.14.4 in August 2023 β€” the same week the Hardcore realms opened β€” Blizzard rebuilt the system around fixed numbers:

  1. Honor becomes contribution points.

At the weekly reset your week's honor converts to CP on a fixed curve. Blizzard's examples: 45,000 honor β‰ˆ 20,000 CP, 175,000 β‰ˆ 40,000 CP, and 500,000 = 65,000 CP, the most one week can count.

  2. The CP sets an "expected rank".

If it's above your current rank, you move up β€” for each rank above yours, up to four, you earn that rank's gap times its change factor (1.0 at the bottom, 0.34 for Rank 14).

  3. Standing is gone.

Nobody else on the realm affects your rank. Honor and kills now show the moment you earn them.

  4. Decay is off.

The August update stopped decay from costing a rank; in December 2023 Blizzard switched it off entirely on Classic Era and Season of Discovery. Only dishonorable kills β€” killing enemy civilians β€” take points away.

The change factor is why the top is slow. A maxed week takes a Rank 2 player to Rank 5, but at Rank 13 the same week adds just 1,700 points toward Rank 14.

How long Rank 14 takes

Using Blizzard's numbers, here is what one week at the 500,000-honor maximum is worth for each rank you climb through. Each week you collect the steps for up to four ranks above your own:

RankPoints neededChange factorPoints a maxed week adds for this step
R22,0001.02,000
R35,0001.03,000
R410,0000.84,000
R515,0000.84,000
R620,0000.84,000
R725,0000.73,500
R830,0000.73,500
R935,0000.63,000
R1040,0000.52,500
R1145,0000.52,500
R1250,0000.42,000
R1355,0000.42,000
R1460,0000.341,700

Add it up and a player who hits the cap every week climbs fast at first β€” about three ranks in week one β€” then crawls: from Rank 11 on there are three or fewer steps left above you, each worth 2,000 points or less. Blizzard put the minimum at about eight weeks of maximum honor from the bottom to Rank 14 when it announced the system, and the last rank alone takes two or three of those resets. Miss the cap and it simply takes longer; nothing is lost while you wait.

Season of Discovery: the same ladder, its own rules

Season of Discovery launched in November 2023 on the same fixed-threshold system, and the December 2023 change that switched decay off covered SoD as well. What SoD added was a rank cap per phase: at level 25 in Phase 1 nobody could pass Rank 3, and Blizzard's plan was to raise the cap with each new phase as the level cap rose, so early ranks couldn't be rushed. The titles, thresholds and weekly maximum are the ones in the tables above.

SoD's world PvP events count too, with one catch. Honor from the Blood Moon's Bloodstained Commendations only lets you rank up if you also earn at least 15 honorable kills in normal PvP β€” battlegrounds or the open world β€” that week. Commendations alone won't do it.

Hardcore, TBC and Mists of Pandaria

Classic Hardcore uses the Era client, but its battlegrounds are switched off and PvP is opt-in with permanent death, so any honor there comes from world PvP β€” a very different proposition with one life. The Burning Crusade replaced the whole rank system with honor and arena points in patch 2.0.1, which is why TBC Anniversary and MoP Classic have no R1–R14 at all β€” their PvP climb is rating. For that, see our PvP rating guide.

World of Warcraft: Forever β€” what Blizzard has said

Forever, which opens on 4 November 2026, 23:00 UTC, brings the fourteen ranks back with a new interface. In its 7 October 2026 post Blizzard described two currencies. Honor is spent on gear and comes from killing players, finishing battlegrounds and PvP quests. Rank Points move you up the ranks and come from battlegrounds and PvP quests, with a boost in holiday-week battlegrounds, under a weekly cap β€” no number yet.

Seasons and rewards

PvP runs in seasons, each with a track of weekly tasks that grant Honor and Rank Points; three tasks a season also give a Legacy Point. Rewards change too: epic belt, boots and gloves tokens from Ranks 8–10, mounts at 11, epic weapons at 14.

Gear and a new battleground

Honor buys a blue PvP set and an epic one; an epic piece needs the blue piece plus an Emboldened Seal with a rank requirement. Forever also adds the Battle for the Darkspear Islands, a 15-versus-15 battleground.

Blizzard hasn't said whether ranks reset each season or whether they decay, so treat any guide that claims to know as a guess.

Help with the grind

FAQ

Common questions

How long does it take to reach Rank 14 in Classic Era?
About eight weeks at minimum, hitting the weekly maximum every week, by Blizzard's own figure when it announced the current system in 2023. Progress is capped at four ranks a week and slows near the top, where a maxed week adds only a few thousand contribution points.
Do honor ranks decay in Classic Era?
No. Blizzard switched decay off for Classic Era and Season of Discovery in December 2023, after the August 2023 update had already stopped decay from costing you a rank. Only dishonorable kills can now lower a rank.
How much honor is the weekly maximum?
In Blizzard's published examples, 500,000 honor in a week converts to 65,000 contribution points, the most a week can count. You also need at least 15 honorable kills that week.
Does WoW Forever have the old PvP ranks?
Yes. Forever brings back Ranks 1 to 14 up to Grand Marshal and High Warlord, earned with Rank Points from battlegrounds and PvP quests under a weekly cap, with PvP seasons and new rewards per rank.
