Gearing in World of Warcraft: Midnight comes down to three numbers: the item level an item drops at, the track it sits on, and the crests it takes to upgrade. This guide lays out all three for Season 2 as of 31 October 2026 — the five upgrade tracks from 266 to 334, the Mistcrests and where they drop, what raids, keys, Delves and Prey give, how the Great Vault works and the catch-up Blizzard added in patch 12.1.5.

Short answer: every piece of Season 2 gear sits on one of five tracks — Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero and Myth — with six ranks each. You upgrade a rank with 20 Mistcrests of that track, so a full upgrade costs 100, and the weekly crest cap was lifted the week of 20 October 2026. The Myth track tops out at 334; only the last two Mythic bosses of The Venomous Abyss drop higher, at 344.

The five upgrade tracks

An item's tooltip shows its track and rank — "Hero 2/6", for example. Each rank up adds three or four item levels, and every track starts where the previous one is two ranks from its end.

Mistcrests: what upgrades cost

Season 2's crests are the Mistcrests. Each upgrade rank costs 20 crests of the item's own track, so taking an item from 1/6 to 6/6 costs 100. Until mid-October the cap rose by 100 crests a week per type; patch 12.1.5 removed it the week of 20 October 2026, so whatever you earn now you can spend.

Crests also feed crafting: a crafted item made with Hero Mistcrests lands at 305–318 and one made with Myth Mistcrests at 318–331, depending on quality — a good way to fill a slot that never drops for you.

The end-of-content drop and the Great Vault slot for the same content are different numbers; the vault is always higher.

The Great Vault in Season 2

The vault is three rows of three slots. You unlock slots by playing during the week and choose one item from everything that unlocked when the weekly reset comes.

Raid

A slot at 2, 4 and 6 bosses from The Venomous Abyss. Heroic kills put a 318 item in the slot; Mythic kills a 334, or 344 from the last two bosses.

Dungeons

A slot at 1, 4 and 8 Heroic, Mythic or Timewalking runs. Each slot uses the lowest run it counts, so eight +10s fill all three at 318.

World

A slot at 2, 4 and 8 world activities — Delves, Prey hunts and other weekly outdoor content. A tier 8 Delve sets a 305 slot. Nemesis delves don't count.

If nothing in the vault helps, you can take Thalassian Tokens of Merit or a Nebulous Voidcore — Midnight's bonus-roll currency, spent on raid bosses, keys, Bountiful Delves and Nightmare Prey — instead.

Late-season catch-up

Patch 12.1.5 arrived on 13 October 2026 and added a mid-season refresh aimed at players who started late or have alts to gear:

Crest cap lifted the week of 20 October 2026 — the biggest change for anyone behind.
An extra Nebulous Voidcore each week from Orin in Silvermoon, and after his "Umbral Blessings of the Catalyst" quest one more a week for gold, Voidlight Marl or Veteran Mistcrests.
Ascendant Venomstones — collect ten and use them near the Catalyst in Silvermoon to raise a fully upgraded Hero or Myth (or top-quality crafted) weapon, trinket or necklace. They drop from Heroic and Mythic raid bosses, +10 and higher keys, tier 11 Bountiful Delves and Nightmare Prey chests.

A weekly plan for a fresh 90

Heroic, then Mythic 0.
Heroic dungeons (item level 266 to queue) drop 276; Mythic 0 drops 292 and resets daily.
Fill the world row early.
Bountiful Delves at tier 8 or above give 295 loot and a 305 vault slot — solo, on your schedule.
Climb to +10.
Each step up the keys raises the chest and the vault; +10 is the line for a 318 slot.
Raid Normal, then Heroic.
Normal drops 292–302; Heroic 305–315 and a 318 vault slot.
Upgrade the slots you'll keep.
Spend crests on Hero and Myth items first — an Adventurer piece will be replaced within days.
