Dota 2 Calibration and Recalibration (2026): How Many Games You Need

How Dota 2 calibration works today: no fixed number of games, the medal at 30 % Rank Confidence, what you need before ranked unlocks, and when the once-a-year recalibration is worth it.

  • No fixed game count
  • Medal at 30% Rank Confidence
  • Recalibrate once a year
  • 100 hours + phone first

"How many calibration games are there?" has had a different answer since April 2023, and many guides, wikis included, still give the old one. This page explains Dota 2 calibration as it works on 2 November 2026: why there is no fixed number of games, what you need before ranked unlocks, how your first medal is decided, what the once-a-year recalibration does, when it's worth using, and how calibration works in a party.

Short answer: Dota 2 calibration has no fixed number of games any more. Your medal appears once your Rank Confidence reaches 30 %, so the count varies from account to account. You need 100 hours played and a unique phone number on your Steam account before ranked unlocks. Recalibration is optional and can be used once a year: it lowers your confidence so your MMR swings more for a while, in both directions.
Key takeaways
  • No set game count: the medal shows at 30 % Rank Confidence (since patch 7.33, April 2023).
  • 100 hours plus a unique phone number come first, and no Low Priority on you or your party.
  • Early games swing more. As confidence rises you settle near Valve's ±25 MMR a game.
  • Recalibrate at most once a year, and only if you think your medal is clearly wrong.
  • The old "10 calibration games" rule is out of date, even where wikis still print it.

How calibration works today

Until 2023 a new account played a set batch of calibration games and then got its medal. Patch 7.33 (20 April 2023) replaced that with Rank Confidence, Valve's measure of how sure the system is about your MMR. You play ranked as normal; each result tells the system a bit more, and when your confidence reaches 30 % the medal appears on your profile.

That's why two friends who start on the same day can get their medals after different numbers of games. Results that keep surprising the system (beating teams it rated above you, or losing to teams it rated below) can keep it lower for longer; results that match its expectations raise it. Valve hasn't published the exact maths. Both Liquipedia and the Dota 2 Wiki still describe ten calibration games: that is the pre-2023 system, so ignore any guide that quotes it as current.

Calibration also has no deadline and no reset date. Dota 2 has had no seasonal resets since 2020, so once you have a medal it stays until you play, or until you choose to recalibrate.

Before you can calibrate

Ranked doesn't open on a fresh account. You need:

  1. 100 hours played

Counted on the Dota 2 account. We couldn't find an official list of which modes count, so if the button is still locked, check the hours the client shows.

  2. A unique phone number

Linked to the Steam account and used by no other ranked account. Community wikis add that a number removed from an account can't be reused on any account for three months.

  3. No Low Priority

Not on you, and not on anyone in your party: one Low Priority player blocks ranked for everyone in it.

Every requirement, the party rules and a fix for each blocked queue are in our ranked requirements guide. If you're still building hours, our beginner heroes guide lists the heroes Valve rates simplest.

How your first medal is decided

The same rule that moves a settled player moves a calibrating one, only harder. In patch 7.33c (May 2023) Valve tied the MMR change to each team's expected chance of winning and said the result is "closer to +/-25 MMR" for players with high Rank Confidence. Low confidence means the opposite: each game moves you a long way, so a streak during calibration matters far more than the same streak later.

Three practical consequences:

  • Play calibration games when you're fresh. A tilted evening at low confidence costs far more MMR than the same evening once you're settled.
  • Play the position you queue for. Your MMR covers every position, but community wikis say not playing your queued role lowers your behaviour score, and Valve's matchmaker uses behaviour scores.
  • Don't read the first medal as final. After it appears at 30 %, your confidence keeps rising and the swings keep shrinking toward ±25. The medal keeps moving with every game, most of all early on.

Valve doesn't publish where a new account's MMR starts or the most a calibration game can move it, so any "you'll place around…" claim is a guess. Whether your first medal is Crusader 3 rank iconCrusader 3 or Legend 3 rank iconLegend 3, what decides it is your results while confidence is low.

From a new Dota 2 account to a medal in five steps: 100 hours played, a unique phone number on the Steam account, ranked games with no Low Priority, Rank Confidence reaching 30 percent, and the medal showing; a Rank Confidence gauge from 0 to 100 percent with the medal marker at 30 percent, calibrating below it and settling above it as swings shrink toward 25 MMR; a recalibration card: once a year, optional, bigger swings until confidence rebuilds, button fixed by Valve on 7 August 2025; notes that the old 10-game rule is out of date and there have been no seasonal resets since 2020

Recalibration: once a year

Recalibration is the one way to make the system re-measure an established account. It is optional and can be used once a year. It lowers your Rank Confidence, so your next games move your MMR much further than ±25, up or down, until confidence rebuilds and the medal settles again. The button is still in the game: Valve's update of 7 August 2025 "fixed the MMR Recalibration button not functioning".

What recalibration does not come with is a promise about where you end up. Valve hasn't said that it drops you to Herald, and we found no official statement that it keeps your current medal either. Plan for a medal that moves, not one that resets to a fixed point.

Should you recalibrate?

Only when you're convinced your medal is wrong. You get one use a year, so time it. Our view:

It can make sense when

  • You've clearly improved, with a win rate well above 50 % at your medal over many games.
  • You're back after a long break and your old medal no longer reflects how you play.
  • You have time to play a long, focused block of ranked while confidence is low.

Skip it when

  • You're on a losing streak: low confidence makes losses bigger too.
  • You want a quick jump. Big swings work both ways, and a bad week is expensive.
  • Your win rate sits near 50 %. That usually means your medal is about right.

If your win rate is high and steady, you may not need it at all. Normal ranked will move you, just at ±25 a game. Our MMR guide shows the net wins every star takes.

Calibrating in a party

You can calibrate with friends inside the normal ranked party rules. Every member needs ranked unlocked (100 hours and a unique phone number), nobody in the party can be in Low Priority, and Valve caps the MMR gap between party members. Valve doesn't publish that cap, and the community figures disagree, so if the game refuses an otherwise eligible party the gap is the likely reason. Community wikis add that a party with an Immortal is rated at the Immortal's level and meets Immortal or Divine players, which is rarely what a calibrating friend wants.

A calibrating account in a party still moves by its own Rank Confidence, so expect it to swing more than its settled friends.

Calibration with a booster

Because there is no fixed count, our calibration games are sold by the game, one to ten per order, priced by your last medal (Herald if the account is new), from the same engine as checkout. Five games on a new account are $8.55 today, and five for a Legend recalibration $14.40. Order what you think you need and add more later. Dota 2 boosting isn't open for orders yet: get the launch alert on the Dota 2 page.

Know the rules first. The Steam Subscriber Agreement (updated 10 September 2026) forbids sharing your account or charging others to use it, and in December 2023 Valve game-banned accounts "shared with other users or services". Read the Risk Disclosure and is Dota 2 boosting bannable? first. Coaching stays inside the rules and helps most in exactly these high-swing games.

FAQ

Common questions

How many calibration games are there in Dota 2?
No fixed number since patch 7.33 (April 2023). Your medal shows once your Rank Confidence reaches 30 %, which takes some accounts more games than others. The old 10-game rule that some wikis still print is out of date.
How often can I recalibrate in Dota 2?
Once a year. Recalibration is optional and starts from the game's MMR Recalibration button; Valve fixed a bug that stopped the button working in its 7 August 2025 update.
Does recalibration reset my medal to Herald?
Valve hasn't said so, and we found no official statement either way. What recalibration does is make the system less sure of your MMR again, so each game moves you further until your Rank Confidence rebuilds and the medal is recalculated.
Can I calibrate in a party?
Yes, within the normal ranked party rules: every member needs ranked unlocked, nobody can be in Low Priority, and the party must stay inside Valve's MMR-gap cap.
