Dota 2 Turbo vs Ranked (2026): Rules, Differences and Which to Play

What Dota 2's Turbo mode changes, what it never counts for, how ranked differs (Ranked Roles, MMR, 100 hours and a phone number) and how to use both modes to get better.

Updated 2026-11-02 · 8 min read · by the BoostPirate crew
  • Turbo never moves MMR
  • Turbo: Shard at 7:30
  • Ranked: 100 h + phone
  • ≈ ±25 MMR a ranked game

Turbo is Dota 2's quick fix: shorter games, no lost gold, a courier of your own. Ranked is where your medal lives. They look like the same game, but the rules underneath are different enough that what you learn in one doesn't always carry over to the other. This guide sets out what Turbo changes, what it never counts for, what ranked asks of you and how to use both to get better — with every rule marked as Valve's or, where only the community documents it, as the Dota 2 Wiki's.

Short answer: Turbo is Dota 2's fast unranked mode. By the community's documentation respawns are quicker, nobody loses gold on death, every player gets a hasted courier and items can be sold anywhere; Valve itself makes Aghanim's Shard available at 7:30 — so games end much sooner. It never changes your ranked MMR or your medal. Ranked uses the full game and Ranked Roles, moves you close to ±25 MMR a game once your Rank Confidence is high, and needs 100 hours played and a unique phone number. Turbo is good for learning heroes and items; laning, farming and objective timing are learned in normal and ranked games.
Key takeaways
  • Turbo never touches MMR — it is unranked; only ranked games move your medal.
  • Everything is faster in Turbo: respawns, couriers, creep upgrades, and the Shard at 7:30 (Valve, 2023).
  • Some progress counts half: Valve gives Turbo half credit on the Phantom Assassin and Pudge arcanas.
  • Ranked = positions, MMR and a medal, behind 100 hours, a unique phone number and no Low Priority.
  • Use Turbo for heroes and items, then normal or ranked games for lanes, farm and timings.

What Turbo is

Turbo is an unranked matchmaking mode built for speed. The community's Dota 2 Wiki describes it as built on All Pick, with the economy, respawns, couriers and buildings changed so that a match ends far sooner than a normal game. Valve itself retuned it in its June 2023 update "Tinkering With Turbo", whose summary sets the tone: "Going fast should never be a cause for fury."

Because it is unranked, a Turbo game has no effect on your ranked MMR. Your medal — from Herald rank iconHerald to Immortal rank iconImmortal — only moves in ranked.

Turbo's rules, and who says so

Valve has published some Turbo rules in its own posts; others are documented only by the community. The table keeps them apart.

The wiki's Turbo pages are undated and partly older than patch 7.41, which rebuilt neutral items (Tier 1 neutral items now come at 0:00 in normal games). Its Turbo neutral-item timings predate that change, so we don't print them.

What Turbo counts for — and what it doesn't

  • Your MMR and medal: never. Turbo is unranked. A hundred Turbo wins leave your medal exactly where it was.
  • Arcana progress: half. Valve's 2023 update gave Turbo games half credit on the Phantom Assassin and Pudge arcanas. We haven't found a Valve statement for other progress items, so read the item's own description.
  • Dota Plus hero progress and profile stats: the community wiki says Turbo earns Dota Plus hero progress at a reduced (half) rate and doesn't update your profile's hero statistics. That isn't confirmed in a Valve post we could read.
  • The 100 hours for ranked: Valve's rule is hours played. We haven't found a Valve statement that treats Turbo time differently, so don't plan around it either way.
  • Low Priority: no Turbo. By the community wiki, Low Priority is Single Draft only, so a player in Low Priority can't queue Turbo — or ranked — until it's cleared. Our Low Priority guide explains the way out.

Ranked in contrast

Ranked is the only mode that moves your ranked MMR. Valve's 7.33c notes of 13 May 2023 say that for players with high rank confidence a game is worth "closer to +/-25 MMR", and the amount also depends on how the two teams' ratings compare. While your Rank Confidence is low, the swings are bigger. Your exact MMR is visible only to you; everyone else sees your medal, from Herald rank iconHerald through Archon rank iconArchon and Divine rank iconDivine up to Immortal rank iconImmortal.

  • To queue at all: 100 hours played, a unique phone number on your Steam account, and no Low Priority — yours or anyone's in your party.
  • By position: ranked is queued through Ranked Roles. Since 1 July 2026, a solo player needs to select at least one of Valve's high-demand roles to avoid spending a Role Queue Game.
  • Party limits: Valve caps the MMR gap in a ranked party, and a party with an Immortal plays at the Immortal's rank. Above 8,500 MMR every ranked game is Immortal Draft and ranked is solo only (Valve, 19 March 2025).
  • No seasons: no seasonal resets, and recalibration is optional, once a year.

Is Turbo good practice for ranked?

For some things, yes — and for some things it teaches the wrong lesson. This is our view, not a Valve rule.

What Turbo trains well

A new hero's buttons and combos, item builds and when they come online, and teamfight decisions — you get more fights per hour than anywhere else. A hero with an unusual mechanic, like Largo portraitLargo's songs on the beat, is quicker to learn in a mode where dying costs little.

What Turbo trains badly

Laning, last-hitting rhythm, farming routes, stacking, warding for a long game and objective timing. A courier that arrives at once, no shop trips, no gold lost on death and towers that fall early all hide the mistakes ranked punishes.

The habit that hurts most is fighting too much. In Turbo a lost fight costs a short respawn and no gold; in ranked it costs gold, map control and often the game. If most of your games are Turbo, play a few normal games before you queue ranked again.

From Turbo to ranked: a checklist

  1. Unlock ranked.

100 hours played and a unique phone number linked to your Steam account — the ranked requirements guide has the details.

  2. Clear any Low Priority first.

Nobody in a party with a Low Priority player can queue ranked.

  3. Relearn the economy.

A few normal games remind you what a death, a lost tower or a walk to the shop really costs.

  4. Choose your positions.

Tick the positions you can play well — and since July 2026, at least one high-demand role as a solo player if you don't want to spend a Role Queue Game.

  5. Expect bigger swings at first.

A new account has no fixed number of calibration games: the medal shows once Rank Confidence reaches 30%, and the swings settle towards ±25 as confidence grows — see the calibration guide.

Making the jump

FAQ

Common questions

Does Turbo affect MMR in Dota 2?
No. Turbo is an unranked mode, so a Turbo win or loss never changes your ranked MMR or your medal. Only ranked games do, by close to 25 MMR each once your Rank Confidence is high (Valve, May 2023).
Is Turbo good practice for ranked?
For hero mechanics, combos and item builds, yes. For laning, farming patterns and objective timing, no: Turbo changes the economy, couriers, respawns and towers, so those habits don't carry over to ranked.
Do Turbo wins count for arcanas?
For the Phantom Assassin and Pudge arcanas, at half credit, by Valve's June 2023 Turbo update. We haven't found a Valve statement for other progress items, so check the item's own description.
Does Turbo count toward the 100 hours for ranked?
Valve's rule is 100 hours played plus a unique phone number on the Steam account. We haven't found a Valve statement that treats Turbo time differently, so don't plan around it either way.
