Which WoW Version Should You Play in 2026? All Seven Compared

Midnight, Classic Era, Hardcore, Season of Discovery, TBC Anniversary, MoP Classic or the new Forever: where each World of Warcraft version stands, who it suits and how much time it asks.

Updated 2026-10-31 Β· 9 min read Β· by the BoostPirate crew
  • Seven versions to choose from
  • Level caps 60, 70 and 90
  • Forever opens 4 Nov 2026
  • Forever raids 9 Dec

World of Warcraft is no longer one game. On 31 October 2026 there are six live versions you can play side by side β€” retail Midnight and five Classic flavours β€” and a seventh, World of Warcraft: Forever, opens on 4 November 2026, 23:00 UTC. They share a name and a launcher but play very differently β€” a character can reach the cap in a day on one and take weeks on another, and on one of them it only has a single life. This guide sets out where each version stands today, who it suits and how much time it asks, so you can pick the one you will still be playing in a month.

Short answer: play Midnight for the newest content and the busiest endgame β€” Mythic+, current raids, rated PvP. Pick Classic Era for the original game in its finished state, Hardcore for one-life tension and Season of Discovery for vanilla remixed with runes. TBC Anniversary and MoP Classic replay an expansion phase by phase. Forever, from 4 November 2026, 23:00 UTC, is a fresh level-60 world with new zones, dungeons and raids where everyone starts on the same day.
Key takeaways
  • Three level caps: 60 on Classic Era, Hardcore, Season of Discovery and Forever; 70 on TBC Anniversary; 90 on MoP Classic and Midnight.
  • Forever is the only fresh start β€” new realms, new content, everyone level 1 on launch night; its raids open 9 December 2026.
  • Midnight is the fastest to level and the deepest at the cap; Classic leveling takes days, Hardcore weeks.
  • The progression versions are late in their run: TBC Anniversary has Black Temple and Zul'Aman open, MoP Classic is on Siege of Orgrimmar.
  • Classic Era and Season of Discovery are complete games: SoD has reached its final phase, and Blizzard has said it has no plans to close its realms.

Midnight β€” the current expansion

Midnight launched on 2 March 2026 and is the World of Warcraft Blizzard updates every few months. The cap is level 90, and Season 2 β€” running since the week of 18 August 2026 β€” brought the eight-boss Venomous Abyss raid, a new Mythic+ season and PvP Season 2; patch 12.1.5 followed on 13 October 2026. Every class and modern system is here: Mythic+ keys, Delves for solo and small-group players, rated arena, Solo Shuffle and Battleground Blitz.

Who it suits: players who want the newest story and the deepest endgame, and who like a weekly rhythm β€” the vault, the key, the raid night. Leveling is the shortest of any version β€” our boosters' pace: 1–80 in ~4 h, 80–90 in ~6 h, the full 1–90 in about ten hours of play.

Classic Era and Classic Hardcore

Classic Era is the original game left in its final state: level 60, the nine original classes, and every vanilla raid from Molten Core to Naxxramas open on weekly lockouts. Its content is complete β€” which is exactly why people play it. Leveling is slow by modern standards β€” our boosters' pace: about six levels a day: 1–30 in five days, 1–60 in about ten.

Classic Hardcore uses the same world with one rule that changes everything: each character has one life. After a death it can only be played again by moving it to a non-Hardcore realm. The official realms have run since 2023, and when the Anniversary realms moved on to The Burning Crusade in January 2026, the Anniversary Hardcore realm stayed in vanilla. Expect the slowest climb of any version β€” our boosters' pace on an insured order: about three levels a day on safe routes: 1–20 in a week, 1–40 in about two weeks, 1–60 in about three.

Season of Discovery β€” vanilla remixed

Season of Discovery keeps the level-60 vanilla world but gives every class runes that unlock new abilities, and it rebuilt the raids along the way. Phase 8 arrived in April 2025 with the Scarlet Enclave, an eight-boss raid at Tyr's Hand. Blizzard's Classic producer said at the time that there was no intention of closing the Season of Discovery realms, so β€” like Classic Era β€” it is now a finished game you can keep playing. Leveling is quicker than on Era β€” our boosters' pace: 1–40 in about three days, 1–60 in about four.

Who it suits: Classic players who know vanilla by heart and want their class to play differently.

TBC Anniversary and MoP Classic β€” an expansion, phase by phase

The Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary realms moved into The Burning Crusade with a pre-patch on 13 January 2026 and opened the Dark Portal on 5 February 2026. Phase 3 β€” Black Temple and the Battle for Mount Hyjal β€” went live on 27 August 2026, Zul'Aman followed in late October 2026, and Sunwell Plateau is the last raid still to come. The cap is level 70, with attunements, heroic dungeons and arena seasons.

Mists of Pandaria Classic launched on 21 July 2025 and reached its fifth phase β€” Siege of Orgrimmar and the Timeless Isle β€” on 2 June 2026. Level 90, the Monk and the Pandaren, pet battles, scenarios and challenge modes, which gained seasons and a Platinum medal in this version.

Who they suit: players who loved an expansion the first time, and anyone who wants raids with a story arc. Join now and you arrive late in each run, with the last raids open or about to open and many guilds already geared for them.

Forever β€” a fresh Classic+ world

World of Warcraft: Forever opens worldwide on 4 November 2026, 23:00 UTC (3 p.m. Pacific). Blizzard describes it as a new permanent home alongside modern and Classic WoW, set in the original continents before Molten Core, with a level cap of 60. It is included with a World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time; the new Skyborne race and its Zephras Isle start come with Blizzard's Skyborne packs.

The content is new: zones such as Mount Hyjal, the Riverglades and Shen'dralas, nine new five-player dungeons among the classic ones, and three raids β€” the ten-player Barrow Deeps, the twenty-player Hyjal Summit and a forty-player Onyxia's Lair β€” that open on 9 December 2026. There are no realm lists: you choose a ruleset (Normal, PvP, Roleplay or Roleplay PvP), each one mega-realm per region, with Hardcore to follow later. Account-wide Legacy rewards come from leveling classes.

Who it suits: anyone who wants to be there on day one, when every economy, guild and ladder starts from zero.

How much time each one asks

Leveling time is the clearest difference, and it is the same pace our boosters keep on real orders:

VersionA full level-up for our boostersAt the cap
Midnight1–80 in ~4 h, 80–90 in ~6 h, the full 1–90 in about ten hours of playweekly vault, keys and raid nights
MoP Classicabout 15 levels a day: 1–60 in four days, 1–85 in six, 85–90 in a dayraid lockouts, challenge modes, dailies
Season of Discovery1–40 in about three days, 1–60 in about fourraid lockouts, the honor grind
TBC Anniversaryabout six levels a day: 1–60 in about ten days, 60–70 in two, 1–70 in about twelveattunements, heroics, arena
Classic Eraabout six levels a day: 1–30 in five days, 1–60 in about ten40-player raids, honor ranks
Foreverabout five levels a day at launch: 1–40 in about eight days, 1–60 in about twelvenew dungeons, raids from 9 December 2026
Classic Hardcoreabout three levels a day on safe routes: 1–20 in a week, 1–40 in about two weeks, 1–60 in about three (insured)whatever you dare

A player new to a version will usually take longer than a booster who has run the route many times β€” especially on Hardcore, where caution is the whole point.

Pick in thirty seconds

  • You want what is new and you play with friends: Midnight now, or Forever from launch night.
  • You have little time and want endgame quickly: Midnight β€” the shortest climb to the cap.
  • You want the game you remember: Classic Era, or Forever if you want it to surprise you again.
  • You want stakes: Classic Hardcore β€” and later Forever's Hardcore ruleset.
  • You want an expansion's raids in order: TBC Anniversary or MoP Classic, knowing both are near the end of their run.
