Where will the 2027 reset put you?
Riot: most players start the year about a full tier below their final rank; the official wiki says at least 4 divisions. Nobody starts above Emerald I. Placements: 5 games per queue, no LP lost, the first win usually 40–80 LP (official wiki, at most 100), nobody places above Diamond III. Solo/Duo and Flex reset separately. Riot hasn't announced the Season 3 end — the countdown uses our estimate (2027-01-06). Checked 2026-10-16.
How the yearly reset works
League runs three seasons a year, and only the first one resets the ladder: between Seasons 1, 2 and 3 your rank simply carries on. When the new year starts in January, Riot drops most players about a full tier below where they finished — the official wiki puts it at 4 divisions or more — and caps everyone at Emerald I, so even Challengers restart there. Then come 5 placement games per queue that can't cost LP and usually pay a big first win.
Riot soft-resets MMR too and says your MMR almost always sits above your rank at the start of a season — so the first weeks pay more LP per win than the rest of the year. Two things are decided by where you finish 2026: your next start (every division higher now is a division higher in January, up to the cap) and your Victorious chroma, which follows your final tier. The placements guide has the details.

Riot's rule of thumb, not a promise: your exact start also depends on your MMR, and placements move you from there.

Common questions
Where will I place after the LoL season reset?
About a full tier below where you finish — Riot's wording; the official wiki says at least 4 divisions — so a Platinum II player starts around Gold II. Nobody starts above Emerald I, Masters and Challengers included. Then 5 placement games per queue move you from there: no LP is lost in placements, the first win usually pays 40–80 LP, and nobody places above Diamond III.
When is the 2027 ranked reset?
Riot hasn't announced the end of Season 3. Last year ranked closed on 7 January 2026 and the new year started the next day; our estimate for this year's close is early January 2027. Riot usually posts the exact time about a month ahead.
Does the reset change my MMR too?
Yes — Riot soft-resets MMR as well, and says your MMR almost always sits above your rank at the start of a new season. That's why the first weeks of a year pay bigger LP gains and smaller losses.
Is it worth climbing before the reset?
Your final tier decides your Victorious chroma (plus every lower tier's), and under the reset rule every division you finish higher starts you a division higher next year — up to the Emerald I cap.
